A horrifying family tragedy unfolds in Duluth

Duluth, Minnesota – In a tragic case of murder-suicide, Anthony Nephew, 46, fatally shot four family members, including his two sons, wife, and ex-wife, before taking his own life, police reported. The incident, described as “senseless” by local authorities, has left the Duluth community in shock.

Police responded to a distress call last Thursday at the home of Erin Abramson, 47, where officers discovered her body along with that of her 15-year-old son, Jacob Nephew. Both victims had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Officers quickly identified Nephew as the suspect and surrounded his residence.

Upon entering Nephew’s home, officers found his body with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The bodies of his current wife, Kathryn Nephew, 45, and their 7-year-old son, Oliver Nephew, were also found inside. Nephew’s troubling behavior had been noted before. He had a history of mental health issues, and his social media posts often featured bizarre conspiracy theories about aliens, Satan, and political divs. Despite identifying as an independent, Nephew frequently criticized Donald Trump on his Facebook page, expressing distrust and fear of religious extremists.

In a post from July, Nephew detailed his mental health struggles, writing, “My mental health and the world can no longer peacefully coexist, and a lot of the reason is religion. I am terrified of religious zealots inflicting their misguided beliefs on me and my family. I have intrusive thoughts of being burned at the stake as a witch or crucified on a burning cross.”

A history of mental health advocacy and warnings

In 2021, Nephew contributed a column to the Duluth News Tribune, where he spoke candidly about the impact of mental health issues on families. “For millions of Americans, a breakdown leads to suicide — or homicide before suicide,” he wrote. His words, eerily prophetic, now cast a haunting shadow over the tragic events in Duluth.

As the investigation continues, the Duluth Police Department has not yet identified a clear motive. Chief Ceynowa emphasized that mental health played a significant role in the tragedy, underscoring the urgent need for better support and intervention services. “This was a senseless act of violence that has devastated multiple families,” Ceynowa stated. “Our thoughts are with the victims’ loved ones as they navigate this unimaginable loss.”
