In a symbolic start to the 2024 presidential election, the tiny northern New Hampshire hamlet of Dixville Notch maintained its historic tradition of midnight voting, delivering a split decision between the two major candidates. The results saw three votes each for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, reflecting the deeply divided national political landscape.

A solitary tradition

For the first time in recent memory, Dixville Notch stands alone in its midnight voting ritual. Its traditional midnight voting companions, Hart’s Location and Millsfield have opted for conventional daytime polling this year, marking a significant shift in this cherished New Hampshire custom.

After learning about midnight voting from a journalist, Tillotson established the practice that would eventually become synonymous with the town’s identity.
