Pascual, from Vallejo, California, earned his place in the championship as a Legacy Athlete after completing more than 15 Ironman triathlons since 1999. His achievement becomes even more extraordinary considering his 2022 diagnosis of Stage 4 mediastinal paraganglioma, a rare and aggressive cancer that has spread to his lungs and bones, leaving him with a five-year survival estimate.

According to the National Cancer Institute, paraganglioma affects only two in every million people, typically striking those between 30 and 50 years old. The championship, comprising a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile marathon run, posed unique challenges for Pascual. “If I run too fast or too hard, my heart rate will go sky high and I will get dizzy and even faint,” he told Good Morning America, describing his training struggles.

The swim portion proved particularly challenging due to his condition. “There were times that I had to flip over my back just to catch my breath,” Pascual recalled, explaining how the tumor affected his blood flow while swimming prone.
