Idaho woman embezzles $170K from employer, spends most on food delivery apps

Embezzlement scheme uncovered by Idaho Tax Commission

An Idaho woman has been sentenced to supervised probation after embezzling over $170,000 from her employer—much of which she reportedly spent on food delivery services.

According to the Idaho Tax Commission, Charlene Smith, who served as an office manager at a tractor supply company in Nampa, Idaho, misappropriated funds from 2021 to 2022. The company, which has since closed, fell victim to Smith’s scheme as she diverted large sums into personal accounts through popular delivery apps like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Facebook Pay.

Smith also reportedly wrote checks to herself from company funds and funneled cash into her own Cash App account. Authorities say the scheme unraveled when Smith failed to declare her embezzled earnings on her 2021 tax returns.

Probation and restitution

Last week, Smith was sentenced to 19 years of supervised probation and ordered to pay over $170,000 in restitution to her former employer. Failure to meet probation terms could result in prison time.

“Deliberately providing false information on a tax return is fraud,” Idaho Tax Commission Chairman Jeff McCray said. “Taxpayers must accurately report income from all sources on their tax returns.”
