Horticulture Teacher Triumphs with Giant Pumpkin

In a thrilling finish at the 51st World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, California, Travis Gienger, a horticulture teacher from Anoka, Minnesota, claimed victory with his 2,471-pound pumpkin. The colossal gourd, weighing roughly the same as a small car, edged out its closest competitor by just six pounds.

Though Gienger’s pumpkin impressed the judges, it fell short of breaking the world record he set last year with a 2,749-pound behemoth. Reflecting on his achievement, Gienger attributed his success to a focus on “healthy soil and well-fed plants,” though he noted that “a cold fall with record-breaking rain” likely limited the pumpkin’s growth.

The long journey to victory

To reach the competition, Gienger and his family drove 35 hours to California with their massive gourd secured on the back of a pickup truck. The pumpkin’s next destination will be Southern California, where a team of professional carvers will transform it into a 3D masterpiece at a Halloween event.

Despite challenging weather conditions, Gienger remained determined. “We had really, really tough weather, and somehow, some way, I kept on working,” he told the Associated Press. “I had to work for this one, and we got it done at the end, but it wasn’t by much.”
