Chuck McGinnis, a public health nurse with the Rhode Island Department of Health, emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention after any bat encounter. “If a person comes into contact and exposure with a bat, we will recommend treatment,” McGinnis advised, reinforcing that even when no visible wounds are present, rabies should not be ruled out.

Rabies is a viral disease that is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. Bats are one of the primary carriers of the virus, which can be transmitted to humans through saliva, even in the absence of a noticeable bite. The disease can incubate for weeks or even months before symptoms, such as fever, confusion, and paralysis, begin to manifest.

Even if there are no visible signs of injury, the risk of rabies exposure remains significant.
