A youth league official called police during a Saturday soccer game in Winter Park, Florida, because of a dispute with the parents of a 3-year-old player. The boy’s family says he was being pushed out of the league for scoring too many goals. Police say they were called about the adults, not the child’s talent, and that nobody was arrested.

The call came on Oct. 24 at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, during a game run by the i9 Sports Maitland/Winter Park program, according to WFTV and WKMG News 6.

The family’s video of the boy, Nevada, scoring goal after goal has passed 4 million views, WKMG reported. His parents have spoken to reporters and shared his name themselves.

What the 911 call and bodycam show

Winter Park police released the 911 call and officers’ body-camera footage on Monday. In the call, the league official said a parent was causing a disturbance, following him and calling him names, WKMG reported. Police said he asked for help with a disagreement between league staff and a player’s parents.

On the bodycam, the official praised the boy before raising his complaint. “He scores a lot of goals, but he pushes the kids,” he told officers, according to WKMG. He also described an earlier run-in in which the parents called him “ignorant” for taking Nevada off to give other children a turn.

“I just want them out. Immediately,” he said, in footage aired by Gray News. The family’s video doesn’t show the boy making contact with other players, ESPN noted.

The police account is narrower than the viral one. The league asked the family to leave and offered a refund, the department said. Officers arrived after the game had ended, while the family was getting ready to go.

“No one was arrested, trespassed, or forced to leave the park,” the department said, calling it “a civil matter between those parties and not criminal.” Its event report says the parents “left field without issue and were cooperative with request of league personnel.” One officer even told the family, “I kinda want to see him play. I bet he’s good.”

Nevada’s parents say he was punished for being good

The family tells it differently. Nevada plays in a league with 5-year-olds, his mother, Martasia, told HuffPost. She said the director had told her “everybody is paying money, so everybody should play.” The parents told officers the season cost them nearly $300, ESPN reported.

“They called the police on a 3-year-old because he’s too good,” his father, Don, said, according to HuffPost. On the bodycam, Martasia told officers: “I’m a little baffled and a little confused because I signed my kid up for soccer.”

She told HuffPost the episode “really traumatized Nevada.” He still wants to play, she said, but is “scared that he did something wrong.”

The widely shared div of 10 goals in about 12 minutes comes from social media, including a post by Robert Griffin III. WKMG, WFTV, ESPN and HuffPost all saw the footage, and none of them gave a goal count. The video shows a small boy outrunning older children and scoring again and again, which is why it spread.

Ms. Rachel, RG3 and the race question

Rachel Griffin-Accurso, the YouTube star known as Ms. Rachel, called the treatment of Nevada “racist, sick, traumatizing and disgusting” on Instagram, Yahoo News reported. She invited him onto her show and urged athletes to give him “all the experiences and love.”

Griffin, the former NFL quarterback, posted that “punishing a 3 year old child for being too good at a sport is RIDICULOUS.” Nevada is Black, and much of the anger online centers on that.

Nothing in the police release, the bodycam or the league’s statement addresses race. The record released so far neither proves nor rules out bias. The police account does undercut one viral claim: officers did not escort the family off the field.

What rec soccer for 3-year-olds is supposed to be

The real argument is over what a league for preschoolers is for. i9 Sports, a national franchise, describes its programs for ages 3 to 6 as play where rules are “loosely enforced” and children swarm the ball like a “beehive,” according to its soccer page. It lists love of the game, confidence and fun as the goals, and it lists score-keeping only for its groups aged 7 and up.

Under that model, pulling a dominant player so others touch the ball is normal practice. Plenty of parents still find it baffling at age 3, when every child paid the same fee. That is a coaching decision, though, and coaching disputes rarely end with a 911 call. By the official’s own account, he called police over the parents’ behavior, not the goals.

Sports officials say that pattern is the bigger problem. In a 2023 survey of more than 35,000 officials by the National Association of Sports Officials, 68% said sportsmanship was getting worse, the National Federation of State High School Associations reported. Officials blamed parents for 40% of the problems, more than coaches.

Parents’ expectations start high and early. In a nationally representative Aspen Institute survey of 1,848 youth sports parents, 11.4% said their child has the ability to play professionally, the report found. Another 10.9% said national or Olympic teams.

i9 Sports is reviewing the case

Viral clips rarely carry the full record, as we found with a baby “mustache” video that turned out to be an AI filter. Here the clip is real, but it shows the goals, not the argument that led to the call. Disputes over kids’ activities do sometimes end in charges for parents, as when Orange County charged 12 parents over their children’s e-motos. Police treated this one as civil from the start.

“The respectful treatment and well-being of every child and family matter deeply to us,” the local i9 Sports program said in a statement. It has contacted the family and begun a review that includes speaking with those involved, and said it would not speculate or share unverified information.

The league has refunded the family’s fall registration, HuffPost reported. Former U.S. national team forward Eddie Johnson will reportedly take Nevada into his Orlando-based youth training program in January.
