Spotify can now ask a Premium Family member to prove they live with the person who pays. The member scans a QR code on that person’s phone, in the same room, within seven days. Miss the deadline, and you can’t join any other Family or Duo plan for 12 months, according to Spotify’s US support page.

The check matters most to people who share a $21.99-a-month Family plan across more than one home. That includes friends splitting the bill. It also includes college students, children of separated parents and people who travel for weeks at a time. Spotify’s page lists no exceptions for any of them.

Spotify added the check quietly, on its US support page

9to5Google first reported the change on October 19, after Reddit users in r/truespotify posted about the prompt. We couldn’t find a newsroom post or press release from Spotify.

The only official description is a new “QR code verification” section on the US edition of its support page. Archived copies of that page on the Wayback Machine show no QR section in any capture up to September 28, 2026. It first appears in a capture dated October 15.

The wording leaves the scale open. “We may ask some Premium Family members to verify they live with the plan manager by scanning a QR code,” the page says. It doesn’t explain how Spotify picks members, how many it is asking or which countries beyond the US it covers.

The code refreshes every few seconds, so both phones have to be in one room

Spotify’s support page lays out the process:

1. The member gets a notification asking them to verify.
2. The plan manager opens the QR code on their phone by tapping their profile picture, then Your Premium, then Manage.
3. The member scans that code with their own phone camera.
4. Both people have to be in the same place, and the scan works only in the mobile app, so both phones need the latest version.
5. The member has seven days from the notification to finish.

The design targets the screenshot. Spotify’s troubleshooting advice tells users to make sure “you’re scanning the code in person, as it changes every few seconds.” It also tells them to check that the time and date are correct on both phones.

It isn’t airtight, though. According to 9to5Google, some Reddit users said they got through by pointing a second device at the code over a video call. Spotify hasn’t commented publicly on that.

A missed scan locks you out of shared plans, not out of Spotify

This isn’t a ban from Spotify. The support page says a member who “misses the window or can’t complete verification” can’t join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months. That member “can choose a different plan,” such as paying for their own Premium Individual or Student account.

The QR section doesn’t say what happens to that member’s Premium access in the meantime. 9to5Google reports that Spotify moves members to the free, ad-supported tier when the window closes. That matches what Spotify spells out for its older address check on the same page.

There, a member who fails “loses access to the plan and switches to the free version,” and the 12 months run “from the date verification failed.” Those address-check rules also let a failed member rejoin the same Family or Duo plan. The QR section is silent on whether that applies to a missed scan, a gap PPC Land was among the outlets to point out.

A live scan is harder to borrow than an address

The rule itself isn’t new. Under its Paid Subscription Terms, the plan manager and every member “must be family members residing at the same address.” Members can switch Family plans “a maximum of once in every twelve-month period.” Spotify can also ask members to re-verify their home address “from time to time.”

What has changed is the proof. Anyone could borrow an address and type it in. A live scan with both phones side by side is much harder to fake. And the 12-month block means someone removed from one shared plan can’t simply hop onto a friend’s.

Students and split households have the least room to comply

A college student living in a dorm or apartment for most of the year gets no exception under the terms. Neither does a child who splits time between separated or divorced parents, if the plan manager lives in the other home. The same goes for someone working away from home when the prompt arrives. Friends and relatives in other homes who share one plan were never eligible in the first place.

Digital Trends noted that students, traveling parents and relatives who live apart may struggle to meet the deadline. Spotify’s page offers no appeal or extension.

These are Spotify’s current US prices, according to its Premium plans page:

• Family: $21.99 a month for up to six accounts, “for up to 6 family members residing at the same address.”
• Duo: $18.99 a month for two accounts, marketed as “for couples under one roof,” with the same household rule.
• Individual: $12.99 a month.
• Student: $6.99 a month for students at an eligible accredited college, which Spotify says currently includes access to a Hulu plan, subject to eligibility.

For a student, the Student plan is the cheapest way back to Premium. Because it isn’t a Family or Duo plan, the 12-month block doesn’t apply to it.

Spotify tried GPS checks in 2019 and dropped them

Spotify has tried to police the household rule before. In 2019, Digital Trends reported that Spotify had updated its Family terms to let it ask members to re-verify their address. The same report said Spotify had dropped an earlier test asking some members for GPS location after privacy complaints.

The current support page says of the address check, “We don’t track your location. We only check your address to verify.” Spotify hasn’t said what data, if any, the QR scan collects beyond the code itself.

Netflix showed that a crackdown doesn’t have to cost subscribers

The bigger difference since 2019 is that Netflix has shown how this kind of enforcement plays out. Netflix said that more than 100 million households were sharing accounts. Months later, it rolled out what it called “paid sharing” in the US on May 23, 2023, according to its Q2 2023 shareholder letter.

The predicted revolt never came. Netflix added 5.9 million paid memberships that quarter and 8.8 million in the third quarter, according to its Q3 2023 letter. A year earlier, it had added 2.4 million. “The cancel reaction continues to be low, exceeding our expectations,” the company told shareholders.

Netflix, however, sold a way out. US subscribers on some plans could add an “extra member” outside their home for $7.99 a month, MacTrast reported at the time. Analysts soon expected Netflix to follow the crackdown with price increases.

Spotify’s US plans page lists no paid add-on for someone who lives elsewhere. Read together with the 12-month block, that suggests Spotify is making the same bet Netflix did. Most people who lose access to a shared plan will pay for their own rather than leave. Spotify’s own price list makes that a $12.99 Individual or $6.99 Student subscription, not a cheaper add-on.

Spotify hasn’t said whether the QR check will reach every Family plan or stay limited to “some” members. Nor has it said whether it will close the video-call workaround. If you get the prompt, the clock starts with the notification: you have seven days to get both phones in the same room.
