A 19-year-old man has been arrested in Illinois for allegedly planning a mass shooting that could have targeted a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area near Chicago, authorities said. Investigators reportedly recovered a manifesto expressing white supremacist ideologies and containing references to violence against people of Indian descent from the suspect, identified as Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine.

The arrest comes as Hindus across the United States begin celebrating Navaratri, a major Hindu festival. It also follows the vandalism of the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir in Richmond Heights, Ohio, approximately two weeks earlier.

Paporakis appeared at the Cook County Third Municipal District Courthouse in Rolling Meadows on Wednesday, where a judge ordered him detained. His next court hearing is scheduled for October 30.

Investigation Into Alleged Hindu Temple Attack

Authorities began investigating Paporakis, who worked as a cashier at Taco Bell in Palatine, after an individual reported that he was allegedly planning a mass shooting.

According to investigators, Paporakis had shared a document outlining an alleged plan for a mass shooting with the individual who reported him. The material reportedly included images of a rifle, rifle magazines, body armor, and other tactical equipment and accessories.

The investigation subsequently uncovered a manifesto that allegedly contained white supremacist views and references to violence against people of Indian descent. These findings raised concerns about a potential attack targeting a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area.

Raja Krishnamoorthi warns against anti-Indian extremism

The case has drawn attention to concerns about anti-Indian hatred and white supremacist extremism in the United States, particularly amid calls from Indian-American leaders and advocacy groups for stronger action against threats targeting the community.

US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and Indian-American advocacy groups have called for stronger action against anti-Indian hatred and white supremacist extremism after a 19-year-old man was arrested over an alleged mass shooting plot targeting a Hindu place of worship in Aurora, Illinois.

The suspect, Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, was arrested on October 11 after authorities received information about threatening electronic communications. Investigators say he shared a document outlining an alleged mass shooting plan and expressing racist, white supremacist views, including hostility towards people of Indian and South Asian descent.

The case has intensified concerns about the potential link between online hate and real-world violence. Krishnamoorthi warned that anti-Indian hatred and white supremacy could have deadly consequences, while advocacy organisations urged federal authorities to scrutinise extremist rhetoric and encouraged Hindu communities to report potential threats.

Reacting to the alleged plot, Krishnamoorthi said he was horrified by the prospect of a white supremacist attack against Indian Americans at a place of worship.

“This is where the poison of anti-Indian hatred and white supremacy can lead, and we cannot wait until innocent people are killed to take it seriously,” the congressman said in a post on X.

He also thanked the co-workers who alerted authorities and the law enforcement officers who intervened. Krishnamoorthi stressed that Americans should be able to practise their faith without fear and called for a united response to hatred.

The Indian American Advocacy Council separately urged the FBI and US Department of Justice to increase scrutiny of online influencers promoting anti-Indian extremism. The organisation warned that hateful rhetoric can spill over into physical violence.

Hindu American Foundation urges community to remain vigilant

The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) welcomed the law enforcement response and urged community members to remain alert following reports that investigators recovered firearms, ammunition, body armour and extremist material during the investigation.

The organisation also encouraged people to report credible threats, particularly as Hindu temples host gatherings and religious celebrations during Navaratri.

The alleged plan has raised concerns among Indian-American and Hindu communities about security at places of worship. However, authorities have not publicly confirmed the specific temple that the suspect allegedly intended to target.

Who is Alexandros Paporakis?

Paporakis, 19, is from Palatine, a suburb in the Chicago metropolitan area. According to police and prosecutors, the investigation began after a person reported receiving disturbing electronic communications from him.

Investigators said the communications included a document titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)” and images of a rifle, ammunition magazines, body armour and tactical equipment.

According to prosecutors, Paporakis had expressed white supremacist views to co-workers and made threats against Indian people. The document allegedly described plans for mass violence against people of Indian, Jewish and African American backgrounds.

Police arrested him on October 11, the day investigators believe he may have planned to carry out the attack. Authorities have not confirmed the precise intended location, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Police recovered weapons and extremist material

Following Paporakis’ arrest, detectives searched his residence and recovered an AR-style rifle without a serial number, loaded magazines, additional ammunition, tactical equipment and items displaying Nazi symbolism, according to police and prosecutors.

Investigators also reported finding material containing racist language directed at South Asians. The evidence is being examined as part of the investigation into the alleged plan.

Prosecutors have also alleged that Paporakis went to the intended target area on October 11 but fled after his rifle jammed. He reportedly contacted a co-worker afterwards and discussed the weapon malfunction. The account forms part of the allegations in the case and has not been established through a criminal conviction.

The Mount Prospect and Palatine police departments coordinated the investigation. The FBI is also assisting, according to authorities.

Suspect faces felony charges

Paporakis has been charged with making a terrorist threat, a Class X felony under Illinois law, and unlawful possession of a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches, a Class 3 felony.

A judge ordered him to remain in custody ahead of trial. His next court appearance was scheduled for October 30, according to reports published on October 15. It was not immediately clear whether he had legal representation.

The charges are allegations, and Paporakis is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Indian Consulate appreciates police action

The Consulate General of India in Chicago said it was aware of reports about the foiled plot and appreciated the timely response by US law enforcement authorities.

The consulate said it was in contact with members of the Indian diaspora and would continue to monitor developments.

The statement offered reassurance to community members while the investigation continued. Authorities have not identified a confirmed ongoing threat linked to the case.

Renewed debate over hate speech and public safety

The alleged plot has prompted fresh calls to address anti-Indian prejudice and white supremacist rhetoric in the United States. Advocacy groups say authorities should pay attention to threats that move from online platforms into plans for physical violence.

The case also underlines the role that bystanders and co-workers can play in preventing potential attacks. According to investigators, information shared by people who received the suspect’s communications helped bring the alleged plan to law enforcement’s attention.

For now, the investigation will focus on the suspect’s communications, the recovered evidence and the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack plan. Krishnamoorthi and advocacy groups are calling for broader action against hate, while the criminal case proceeds through the courts.
