US President Donald Trump has claimed that large-scale oil, gas and mineral exploration is about to begin in Greenland, renewing attention on the Arctic island’s untapped natural resources. However, he has not identified the companies involved, outlined a timeline or provided details of any specific drilling operation.

In a post on Truth Social on October 14, Trump said experts believe Greenland contains more easily accessible oil than almost anywhere else in the world. His announcement comes weeks after the United States, Denmark and Greenland signed a security agreement aimed at easing tensions over Washington’s ambitions in the strategically important territory.

Despite Trump’s remarks, it remains unclear what exploration activities he was referring to. The latest agreement expands US military access to Greenland but does not grant Washington special rights to explore or extract its natural resources.

Greenland’s oil potential faces major challenges

Greenland is believed to hold significant mineral resources, including rare earth elements, as well as potential offshore deposits of oil and natural gas. These resources have attracted international interest as governments seek to diversify energy supplies and reduce reliance on China for critical minerals.

However, turning those resources into commercially viable projects could prove difficult. Greenland’s harsh Arctic climate, limited infrastructure, remote geography and challenging geological conditions have deterred several exploration efforts.

Much of the island is covered by a massive ice sheet, while offshore oil and gas prospects face additional obstacles linked to Arctic conditions. These factors can make exploration, drilling, transportation and eventual production expensive and technically demanding.

The US Geological Survey has estimated substantial undiscovered oil and natural gas resources in the broader West Greenland-East Canada geological province. However, such estimates represent potential resources, not proven reserves that can necessarily be extracted profitably.

Greenland halted new oil and gas exploration licences in 2021

One of the biggest obstacles to a major new drilling push is Greenland’s existing energy policy.

In 2021, the Greenlandic government decided to stop issuing new oil and gas exploration licences, citing environmental risks, climate concerns and the potential effects of petroleum activity on fisheries and other local industries.

Some licences issued before that decision remain active. However, their existence does not mean commercial production has been authorised or that new drilling can begin immediately. Projects must still satisfy applicable regulatory and environmental requirements.

This distinction is important because Trump’s announcement has not been accompanied by details demonstrating that Greenland’s licensing policy has changed or that a new large-scale drilling programme has received approval.

US, Denmark and Greenland reached a security agreement

Trump’s latest comments follow an agreement signed by the United States, Denmark and Greenland on September 22, 2026. The arrangement was designed to reduce diplomatic tensions after repeated threats by Trump to bring Greenland under US control.

The agreement provides for an expanded US military presence, including plans for additional defence areas and cooperation related to the proposed Golden Dome missile defence system. It also reaffirms the framework recognising Denmark’s sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

The pact addresses Arctic security, military access and restrictions involving certain foreign investments. It does not explicitly give the United States exclusive rights to Greenland’s oil, gas or minerals.

Greenland remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and decisions involving the island’s natural resources are subject to its governing institutions and applicable laws.

Trump highlights Greenland’s strategic importance

Alongside his comments about natural resources, Trump emphasised Greenland’s importance to US national security and the defence of North America and Europe.

He argued that the island’s geographic position gives the United States an important vantage point for detecting and responding to potential threats, including missiles and drones.

Greenland’s location between North America and Europe makes it significant for Arctic surveillance and missile-warning systems. The existing US Pituffik Space Base already plays a role in missile warning, missile defence and space surveillance.

Washington’s push to expand its presence reflects growing strategic competition in the Arctic, where military activity, shipping routes and access to natural resources have drawn increased international attention.

Will large-scale drilling actually begin?

Trump’s statement has raised the prospect of renewed investment in Greenland’s energy and mineral sectors, but the practical details remain unresolved.

No specific exploration programme, company, drilling schedule or newly approved project was identified in his announcement. The existing US-Denmark-Greenland security agreement also does not, by itself, establish a new oil and gas development programme.

Any major expansion would need to address Greenland’s licensing framework, environmental safeguards, infrastructure constraints and the commercial viability of deposits in difficult Arctic conditions.

For now, Trump’s remarks signal an interest in exploiting Greenland’s resource potential rather than confirmation that large-scale oil and gas drilling is about to start. Whether that interest develops into actual projects will depend on regulatory decisions, investment and cooperation with Greenlandic authorities.
