German police are investigating an unusual case involving a humanoid robot accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl outside a fast-food restaurant in Cologne. Authorities suspect two males may have remotely operated the machine during the incident, which reportedly was livestreamed on TikTok.

The incident took place around midnight on October 10, 2026, on Palmstrasse in Cologne. According to police, the approximately four-foot-tall robot approached the girl from behind, touched her buttocks and made thrusting movements toward her while she was out with friends.

The case has raised questions about the potential misuse of remotely controlled robots and the legal responsibility of people who use machines to carry out acts of harassment.

What happened in the Cologne robot assault case?

According to the Cologne Police Headquarters, the girl was near a fast-food restaurant when a red-and-gold humanoid robot approached her from behind.

Police said the machine touched the teenager’s buttocks and made thrusting movements against her. The girl was reportedly with friends at the time.

Authorities are investigating whether the robot’s movements were deliberately controlled by two male suspects, aged 16 and 19, with the intention of sexually harassing the girl.

The older suspect is accused of filming the incident and livestreaming it on TikTok, according to the police account. Investigators are examining the available evidence to establish the precise roles of both individuals.

The victim and the suspects have not been publicly identified.

How did police find the humanoid robot?

Police officers responded to a report about the incident and subsequently located the robot inside the trunk of a Volkswagen sedan belonging to the suspects.

The humanoid was reportedly dressed in a sleeveless white shirt and sweatpants and wore glasses. Its appearance, designed to resemble a human, made the incident particularly unusual.

Officers seized the robot and the mobile phones belonging to the two suspects as part of the investigation.

Investigators are examining the devices for recordings, communications and other evidence that could establish whether the machine was remotely operated during the alleged assault.

Cologne police said the criminal investigation department was investigating the case on suspicion of sexual harassment.

Who is being investigated in the case?

Two males, aged 16 and 19, are under investigation in connection with the incident.

Police are seeking to determine whether the younger suspect operated the robot and whether the older suspect filmed and livestreamed the alleged assault. The investigation will also examine whether the actions were intentional and how the two individuals may have coordinated their activities.

At this stage, the allegations remain under investigation. The available information does not establish that either suspect has been convicted of an offense.

The seized phones and robot could provide evidence about the machine’s control system, the sequence of events and any video recordings of the incident.

Can a person be held responsible for harassment carried out by a robot?

The case raises a broader legal question about the use of robots to commit acts that would be unlawful if carried out directly by a person.

A remotely controlled machine does not eliminate the responsibility of the individual operating it. If investigators establish that a person deliberately used a robot to touch someone without consent, the operator’s actions and intent could be relevant to determining criminal liability under applicable German law.

The specific charges and potential consequences would depend on the evidence, the conduct established by investigators and the relevant legal provisions.

The reported livestream could also be significant if it helps establish what the suspects knew, whether they intended the machine to make contact with the girl, and whether they recorded or distributed the incident.

However, authorities have not yet announced a final determination of responsibility in this case.

What does the incident reveal about the misuse of robots?

Robots are increasingly being developed for use in public spaces, hospitality, education and personal assistance. Their growing presence creates new opportunities, but it also introduces questions about safety, supervision and accountability.

A robot capable of moving through a public environment can potentially make physical contact with people. When its movements are controlled remotely, investigators may need to determine not only what the machine did but also who issued the commands and whether safeguards were bypassed.

The Cologne incident highlights several concerns:

• Remote control: Investigators must establish who controlled the robot and how its movements were directed.
• Physical safety and consent: Machines operating around the public need safeguards against unwanted physical contact.
• Digital evidence: Videos, phone records and control-system data may be important in establishing what happened.
• Accountability: The use of a machine does not automatically remove the responsibility of the person directing its actions.

The case remains unusual, but it illustrates why the deployment of robots in public settings requires clear safety rules and appropriate oversight.

What happens next in the investigation?

Cologne police are examining the seized robot and phones to determine how the alleged assault occurred and whether the two suspects deliberately used the machine to harass the teenager.

Investigators will need to establish the sequence of events, identify the individuals responsible for the robot’s movements and assess any recordings or digital communications connected to the incident.

Further details may emerge as authorities review the evidence. Until then, the case remains an investigation into alleged sexual harassment, and the suspects’ roles have not been conclusively established.
