Christa Pike, the Tennessee death-row inmate who survived a failed execution last week, has begun walking around her hospital room, according to her attorney.

The development marks a significant change from the days immediately after Tennessee’s September 30 execution attempt, when Pike was unconscious and hospitalised in critical condition.

Stephen Ferrell, one of Pike’s attorneys, told the BBC that the 50-year-old was “up and walking” for the first time on Thursday, although only for a short distance inside her hospital room.

“She is up and walking for the first time today, but just around the room, not very far,” Ferrell said.

Christa Pike remains medically vulnerable, however. Her lawyers say she continues to experience confusion and difficulty using her arms, while the full extent of any lasting injuries is still unknown.

The update comes as a Tennessee judge orders the state to preserve evidence from the failed execution, potentially setting the stage for additional legal action.
