Anne Carson learned that she had won one of the world’s most prestigious literary prizes while doing something decidedly ordinary: sweeping her kitchen floor.

The Canadian poet, essayist, translator and classicist was at her home in Reykjavík, Iceland, on Thursday morning when the Swedish Academy announced that she had been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Instead of waiting anxiously for the announcement or gathering with family and friends, Carson was busy with household chores. And, in keeping with her famously unconventional personality, she initially did not even answer the phone.

“I noticed the floor needed sweeping, so I leapt up to do that,” Carson told the Nobel Prize in a conversation conducted shortly after the announcement.

There was a problem, however. Carson has a habit of switching off her phone when it rings.

Her husband eventually answered the call and persuaded her to return it.

“So, I’m the husband, and you owe me because I’m the one who made her actually call back,” he joked during the conversation.

Carson then explained her usual phone habits.

“Yeah, he answers the phone. I usually turn the phone off. He answers it and then makes me call back.”

Her reaction to the Nobel announcement was characteristically understated.

“Just seems a little insane. I think you’re all insane,” Carson said.

Anne Carson wins the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

The Swedish Academy awarded Carson the Nobel Prize in Literature for “her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”

The citation captures the central feature of Carson’s career.

For decades, she has moved freely between poetry, prose, translation, scholarship and visual experimentation, often refusing to stay inside conventional literary categories.

Her writing frequently reaches back to ancient Greek literature while addressing subjects that remain intensely modern: love, desire, grief, loneliness, memory and identity.

At 76, Carson is one of the most distinctive divs in contemporary English-language literature.

Her work has earned major literary honors and fellowships, including a MacArthur Fellowship, and she has taught classics and creative writing at universities in Canada and the United States.

Why was Anne Carson surprised by the Nobel?

Carson’s reaction was striking partly because of how matter-of-fact it was.

While Nobel announcements often produce scenes of tears, champagne and stunned congratulations, Carson was more concerned with the floor that needed sweeping.

The phone itself became part of the story.

She said that she tends to switch it off whenever it rings, meaning the most important literary phone call of her life could easily have gone unanswered.

Her husband became the unexpected gatekeeper between Carson and the Swedish Academy.

That small domestic detail has made the Nobel announcement particularly memorable because it fits the image many readers have of Carson: a writer more interested in ideas, language and experimentation than ceremony.

What will Carson do with the Nobel money?

Carson was equally unconventional when asked what winning the prize meant financially.

Rather than describing what she planned to buy, she said she and her husband were already thinking about giving the money away.

“No. No, I don’t. We are just thinking of ways to give the money away,” Carson said.

She mentioned a friend who needs a house and added that she and her husband frequently donate to Doctors Without Borders.

Her response was revealing.

The financial windfall associated with the Nobel Prize is enormous, but Carson’s immediate instinct was not personal extravagance.

Instead, she was already thinking about people and organizations that could use the money.

Who is Anne Carson?

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson developed an interest in classical Greek at a young age.

A high-school Latin teacher helped introduce her to ancient Greek, an encounter that would eventually shape almost everything she wrote.

Carson studied at the University of Toronto, where she earned a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and PhD in Classics. She also spent time at the University of St Andrews studying Greek metrics.

Her academic background is central to understanding her literary career.

Carson does not simply borrow stories from antiquity. She takes ancient texts, myths and fragments and places them in unexpected conversations with modern life.

That approach has allowed her to write books that can feel like poetry, criticism, translation, fiction and scholarship at the same time.

What are Anne Carson’s most famous books?

One of Carson’s best-known works is “Autobiography of Red,” published in 1998.

The book is a novel in verse inspired by the ancient Greek poet Stesichorus and the myth of Geryon, a winged red monster defeated by Herakles.

Carson transforms that ancient div into a contemporary young man dealing with love, sexuality, loneliness and heartbreak.

The result is neither a conventional retelling of Greek mythology nor a conventional novel.

It is precisely that collision of ancient myth and contemporary emotional life that became one of Carson’s signatures.

Another major work is “The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos,” published in 2001.

The book explores marriage, desire, betrayal and the collapse of a relationship while borrowing the structure and imagery of the tango.

Carson’s other important works include “Glass, Irony, and God,” “Plainwater,” “Men in the Off Hours,” “Decreation,” “Red Doc>” and “Float.”

What is “Nox” and why is it important?

Among Carson’s most unusual books is “Nox,” published in 2010.

The work was created in memory of her brother Michael, who died in Denmark.

Rather than presenting itself as a conventional book, “Nox” was originally designed as a boxed object containing an accordion-style reproduction of pages featuring photographs, letters, translations and fragments.

The form reflects Carson’s broader approach to literature.

For her, a book does not necessarily have to behave like a traditional book.

Words can interact with photographs, visual design, fragments and archival material to create something closer to an artistic object.

That willingness to challenge the physical and intellectual boundaries of literature is one reason the Swedish Academy described her work as creating “new forms for contemporary literature.”

Carson is also a scholar and translator of ancient Greek

Carson’s relationship with classical literature extends well beyond inspiration.

She has translated works by ancient Greek writers including Sappho, Sophocles and Euripides.

Her translation work is notable because she does not attempt to make the ancient texts sound artificially distant or formal.

Instead, her versions often use strikingly contemporary language while preserving the tensions and ambiguities of the originals.

That approach has sometimes generated debate among classicists and literary critics, but it has also helped introduce ancient texts to readers who might never encounter them through conventional academic editions.

Her first major book began as scholarship

Carson’s first book, “Eros the Bittersweet,” grew out of her academic work on ancient Greek literature.

Her doctoral research explored love and desire in classical texts, and Carson developed those ideas into a literary-critical work that examined how desire operates through absence, longing and contradiction.

The book was first published in 1986 and established several of the themes that would continue appearing throughout her career.

In Carson’s work, scholarship and poetry are rarely far apart.

Ancient languages are not merely subjects she studies. They become raw material for literary experimentation.

Why the Swedish Academy chose Anne Carson

The Nobel citation focuses on Carson’s ability to create new literary forms through a “playful dialogue” with classical tradition.

That description helps explain why her career stands apart.

She can move from a translation of Sappho to a contemporary verse novel, from academic analysis to visual art, without treating those categories as rigid boundaries.

Her work often asks readers to reconsider what a poem, essay or story is supposed to look like.

Instead of simply modernizing ancient texts, Carson puts ancient and modern ideas into conversation.

The result can be intellectually demanding, but it is also deeply concerned with universal human experiences.

What did Anne Carson say to aspiring writers?

In her conversation with the Nobel Prize, Carson offered advice for people hoping to become writers.

Her message was notably practical: read, pay attention and keep making things.

Carson has often spoken about the importance of curiosity and about not treating conventional literary categories as rules that must be obeyed.

That philosophy is visible across her career.

She has collaborated with artists, musicians and performers, experimented with typography and visual presentation, and repeatedly pushed poetry toward forms that resemble essays, plays and visual art.

Why the kitchen floor story feels so fitting

There is something almost perfectly Carson-like about receiving the world’s highest literary honor while sweeping the kitchen.

Her work has always placed the extraordinary beside the ordinary.

Ancient Greek myths sit beside modern relationships. Academic scholarship can sit beside jokes. Poetry can become criticism. A book can become an art object.

So perhaps it is appropriate that the announcement of her Nobel Prize began not with a grand ceremony, but with dust on a kitchen floor and a phone call she nearly ignored.

Carson’s response also offered a glimpse of how she might approach the prize itself.

She called the entire episode “a little insane”, wondered whether everyone involved was insane, and began thinking about how to give the money away.

The Swedish Academy may have handed Carson the world’s most famous literary honor.

Anne Carson, meanwhile, was still thinking about the floor.
