A unique work connected to surrealist master Salvador Dalí has been stolen from a private contemporary art centre in central France, adding another major art theft to a growing list of cultural-property crimes that have drawn attention across the country.

The stolen object is the elaborate bronze cover created by Dalí for L’Apocalypse de Saint Jean, The Book of the Apocalypse — a monumental art book commissioned by French publisher Joseph Forêt. The cover alone weighs about 150 kilograms (330 pounds) and is decorated with gold, precious stones and seashells.

The theft occurred overnight between Sunday, October 4, and Monday, October 5, at the Centre d’Art Contemporain in Issoire, in France’s Puy-de-Dôme region. Clermont-Ferrand prosecutors described the stolen work as an “exceptional and unique” piece of art. An investigation has been assigned to the Clermont-Ferrand gendarmerie.

What was stolen from the French museum?

Despite early descriptions of the theft as involving The Book of the Apocalypse, it was specifically the monumental bronze cover designed and sculpted by Dalí that was stolen.

The book itself consists of enormous parchment pages and artistic contributions from leading painters and writers of the 20th century. The complete work weighs roughly 210 kilograms, while the bronze cover accounts for about 150 kilograms of that total.

The cover is particularly distinctive. Dalí created it in bronze and incorporated gold, precious stones and seashells into the design, giving the object both artistic and material value.

The book and its cover were also displayed separately rather than functioning as a conventional bound volume. The parchment pages were kept elsewhere at the art center and have not been reported stolen.

Why is Dalí’s ‘Book of the Apocalypse’ so unusual?

L’Apocalypse de Saint Jean was conceived as far more than an illustrated book.

French art publisher Joseph Forêt began the project in 1958, drawing inspiration from the biblical Book of Revelation. He brought together 14 prominent artists and writers — seven painters and seven writers — to create an extraordinary edition on large sheets of parchment.

Among the artists involved were:

• Salvador Dalí
• Georges Mathieu
• Bernard Buffet
• Leonor Fini
• Léonard Foujita
• Pierre-Yves Trémois
• Ossip Zadkine

The literary contributors included divs such as Jean Cocteau, Jean Rostand, Emil Cioran, Jean Giono and Ernst Jünger.

Dalí’s contribution was particularly dramatic: he designed and sculpted the bronze cover that became one of the work’s defining features.

The project was completed around 1961 and subsequently exhibited internationally.

How valuable was the stolen Dalí artwork?

The current value has not been publicly established, but reports describe the work as being worth several million euros.

Its historical valuation is also remarkable. When the work was created, it was reportedly valued at two million French francs, which was described at the time as making it the world’s most expensive book. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regional authority has similarly described it as the world’s most expensive and heaviest book at the time of its creation.

Those historical distinctions no longer apply in a strict record-book sense, but they illustrate why the object has long been regarded as an extraordinary piece of book and art history.

Its present-day value is difficult to separate from its uniqueness. This is not a mass-produced Dalí print or a conventional collectible that can easily be replaced. The bronze cover was created specifically for this monumental project.

Who owned the Dalí artwork?

The work was privately owned by French art collector and restoration specialist Christian Karoutzos, who acquired it in the early 2000s.

Before reaching France, the artwork had a complicated history. After being exhibited internationally, it was stored in Switzerland and later sold to Japanese owners. At one point, those owners reportedly considered dismantling the work and selling its components separately.

Karoutzos eventually acquired it and brought it back to Issoire.

He later displayed the work at his contemporary art center, where it was being exhibited this autumn when the theft occurred.

The owner has described the loss as effectively irreplaceable because of the work’s unique character and historical significance.

How was the 150-kg Dalí cover stolen?

That remains one of the central questions in the investigation.

The theft occurred overnight from October 4 to October 5. Early reports did not establish exactly how the object was removed from the building.

There are, however, important details that investigators will be examining. One report said that a main gate at the arts center had been damaged, while local officials initially said they could not establish whether there had been a conventional break-in.

The sheer weight of the bronze cover makes the disappearance particularly unusual.

A 150-kilogram object cannot simply be slipped into a bag or carried away unnoticed by one person. Investigators therefore face questions about how many people were involved, what equipment may have been used and how the object was transported.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed whether suspects have been identified or provided details about a possible vehicle or method of removal.

Why would thieves target such a distinctive artwork?

The object’s uniqueness presents both an opportunity and a problem for whoever stole it.

A famous Dalí work has a potentially high value on the illicit art market, but its unusual appearance and enormous weight also make it difficult to conceal.

The stolen cover is not an anonymous object. Its provenance and design are well documented, and its association with Dalí makes it recognizable to specialists, auction houses, dealers and law-enforcement agencies.

That could make it difficult to sell openly.

For investigators, the work’s unusual physical characteristics may therefore become an advantage. A distinctive bronze cover weighing around 150 kilograms is considerably harder to disguise than a small painting or sculpture.

What is happening with the investigation?

The Clermont-Ferrand prosecutor’s office has entrusted the investigation to the local gendarmerie’s research brigade.

Authorities have so far confirmed the theft and described the object as an exceptional and unique artwork. Details about the suspects, security footage and the exact circumstances of the disappearance have not been publicly released.

The investigation will likely focus on reconstructing what happened at the art center between the last confirmed sighting of the work and its discovery missing.

Because the object is so distinctive, investigators may also alert art dealers, auction houses and other institutions to prevent an attempted resale.

The theft comes amid wider concern over French museum security

The Dalí theft arrives at a time when security at French cultural institutions is facing renewed scrutiny.

France has experienced several high-profile museum and gallery burglaries, including the widely reported Louvre heist in 2025 and a September 2026 theft involving works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir at a museum in the Alpes-Maritimes region.

The Issoire case is different in important respects. The artwork was displayed in a private contemporary art center rather than one of France’s largest national museums.

That distinction raises a broader security question: how well-equipped are smaller museums and private collections to protect artworks that can be worth millions of euros?

For institutions displaying valuable private collections, security involves more than alarms and locks. Physical access, surveillance, inventory controls, insurance requirements and emergency response can all become critical when an artwork is both valuable and difficult to replace.

Why the Dalí theft matters beyond its monetary value

The most significant feature of the stolen object may ultimately be that it cannot simply be valued like an ordinary commodity.

The bronze cover represents a collaboration between a major publisher and some of the most prominent artistic and literary divs of the 20th century. Its connection to Dalí gives it an additional layer of cultural significance.

Its unusual history — from an ambitious postwar publishing project to international exhibitions, storage in Switzerland, Japanese ownership and eventual return to France — makes the object a piece of cultural history in its own right.

That history also makes recovery particularly important. Even if the financial value could be quantified, replacing the original would be impossible.

For now, French investigators face an unusual art-theft case: a one-of-a-kind Dalí creation weighing roughly as much as an adult human, missing from a museum despite its size and distinctive appearance.

The question is no longer simply where the artwork is, worth millions. It is how a 150-kilogram piece of art disappeared in the first place — and whether investigators can recover it before it vanishes into the illicit antiquities and art market.
