In the serene San Gabriel Valley foothills of Los Angeles, a black bear has made an unexpected home in the crawlspace of Bob and Susan Nesler’s residence. For the past two weeks, this uninvited guest has found comfort under their porch, returning each morning after nightly adventures.

Meet “Junior”: The unofficial tenant

The Neslers, embracing humor and patience, have named their new visitor “Junior.” In a conversation with ABC 7, Bob Nesler shared, “Apparently he leaves to go out on the town in the evening, and then he comes back about 5:30 in the morning.” Despite Junior’s unconventional lifestyle, the couple has found themselves adapting to the bear’s routine.

Peaceful coexistence with concerns

While Junior has not shown any aggressive behavior, the Neslers are mindful of potential risks. “That’s his den right now. We gotta get him out of there because, you know, I think we’d be held responsible if anybody got hurt, but he hasn’t bothered us in any way,” Bob explained. The couple is working with California Fish and Wildlife agents, who have captured images of Junior with motion-activated cameras.

A creative perspective on wild neighbors

Bob, a retired Hollywood animator, finds inspiration in Junior’s presence. Once a contributor to the Yogi Bear series, he is now sketching the bear using the photos captured. Despite the occasional “piles of scat” left by Junior, the Neslers are no strangers to wildlife, having witnessed everything from coyotes to bobcats.

Awaiting a safe resolution

While enjoying their unusual houseguest, the Neslers are determined to ensure Junior’s safe relocation without harm. With his distinctive brown coat—a reminder that black bears can vary in color—Junior continues to be a fascinating part of their daily lives.

Bob’s understanding nature shines through as he remarks, “He’s just an old bear,” capturing the spirit of this unique coexistence with a touch of empathy and humor.
