Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it has seized a U.S. underwater drone in the Strait of Hormuz, claiming the unmanned vehicle was conducting espionage in the strategically vital waterway.

The IRGC Navy said Sunday, September 27, that its forces captured a REMUS 600 autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) during what it described as a coordinated operation involving intelligence capabilities and electronic warfare. The Guards said the vehicle is now being examined by Iranian specialists for data recovery.

The claim marks the second reported seizure of a U.S. unmanned underwater vehicle in the Strait of Hormuz this month. Iran previously said it captured an Anduril Dive-LD on September 8, although U.S. officials said that vehicle had malfunctioned before Iran took possession of it and did not contain classified systems or sensitive data.

The latest incident could therefore matter less for the hardware itself than for what it reveals about the increasingly contested underwater environment around one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.

What did Iran say it captured?

The IRGC identified the vehicle as a REMUS 600, an autonomous underwater vehicle designed to conduct missions without a crew aboard.

Iran said the UUV was operating in the Strait of Hormuz “for espionage purposes” and described its capture as the result of a complex operation combining intelligence oversight and electronic warfare. The IRGC also said specialists were working to recover information from the vehicle.

Those allegations have not been independently established.

The REMUS 600 is a real and well-established underwater platform. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution says the system was developed with funding from the U.S. Office of Naval Research and can operate at depths of up to 600 meters (about 1,969 feet). Its modular design allows sensors to be condivd for different missions, and WHOI lists endurance of nearly 70 hours under specified operating conditions.

HII, which now produces the broader REMUS family, describes its unmanned underwater vehicles as platforms used across defense, research and commercial operations, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and mine-countermeasure missions.

Why is an underwater drone important?

Unlike conventional aircraft or surface drones, an autonomous underwater vehicle can operate below the surface without maintaining a continuous radio connection to its operator.

That makes underwater drones useful for missions such as:

• Mapping the seabed
• Detecting naval mines
• Inspecting underwater infrastructure
• Conducting oceanographic surveys
• Collecting sonar and other sensor data
• Supporting intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions

The same flexibility that makes these systems useful also makes them attractive targets during periods of military tension.

An AUV does not necessarily need to be carrying classified equipment to provide useful information. Its navigation logs, mission parameters, sensor configuration or stored survey data could potentially reveal where it operated and what it was looking for. What information, if any, was aboard the vehicle in this case remains unclear.

Why does the Strait of Hormuz matter?

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman that connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

Its importance extends far beyond the countries immediately surrounding it. The waterway is a major route for oil and liquefied natural gas shipments from Gulf producers to international markets.

U.S. Energy Information Administration data show that 20.9 million barrels per day of oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz in the first half of 2025, equivalent to roughly one-quarter of global seaborne oil trade. The same period saw about 11.4 billion cubic feet per day of LNG transit the strait.

More recent EIA data show how dramatically regional conflict has affected traffic. Oil flows through Hormuz averaged 14.9 million barrels per day in the first quarter of 2026 and 4.9 million barrels per day in the second quarter, according to the agency’s August 2026 analysis.

That makes every military incident around the waterway potentially significant for energy markets and commercial shipping.

Iran says the strait is now a restricted zone

The IRGC Navy said Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz is a restricted area and warned that it would respond to what it described as dangerous maneuvers and unauthorized transit.

That language is significant because the waterway is an international maritime passage used by commercial vessels and military forces. Iran’s statement therefore adds another layer of uncertainty for ships operating in the area.

The announcement also comes amid broader tensions surrounding the strait. On September 22, an Iranian official said Tehran was prepared to reopen the waterway within a week if the United States eased military pressure and lifted its blockade on Iranian ports, according to Reuters.

The latest drone seizure claim comes against that already strained backdrop.

How does this compare with the earlier U.S. drone seizure?

The September 8 incident provides important context.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had captured an Anduril Dive-LD, a large autonomous underwater vehicle, near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. The company describes the Dive-LD as a modular autonomous undersea vehicle capable of missions including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, mine warfare, seabed mapping and infrastructure inspection.

The vehicle is substantially larger than the REMUS 600. Anduril lists the Dive-LD at approximately 5.8 meters (19 feet) long, with a maximum endurance of up to 10 days and an operating depth of up to 6,000 meters.

But the U.S. account of that incident differed sharply from Iran’s presentation.

U.S. Central Command said the Dive-LD had malfunctioned more than a day before the reported seizure while surveying regional waters. A U.S. military spokesman said the older vehicle used commercially available technology and did not carry classified sonar or radar equipment.

Anduril likewise said the system was designed to operate in dangerous environments where losing a vehicle was an anticipated possibility.

The September 8 episode therefore illustrates why the latest Iranian claim needs to be treated carefully: Iran’s description of what a captured drone was doing does not necessarily establish the vehicle’s actual mission or the sensitivity of the information it carried.

What could Iran gain from capturing an underwater drone?

The potential value of a captured AUV depends heavily on its configuration and mission.

An autonomous vehicle can contain information beyond the physical sensors attached to it. Depending on the system, investigators could potentially examine stored mission data, navigation information, sensor recordings, software and hardware configurations.

That does not automatically mean a captured drone contains classified military secrets.

REMUS systems are used for a range of military, scientific and commercial applications, and their modular architecture means the exact equipment aboard a particular vehicle can vary substantially. HII specifically describes the REMUS family as supporting interchangeable sensors and payloads.

For that reason, the most consequential question may not be simply whether Iran captured the vehicle, but what configuration it had and what data remained stored inside it.

At this point, Iran has said that its specialists are working to recover data, but it has not publicly disclosed what information it has obtained.

What does the incident mean for U.S.-Iran tensions?

The reported seizure underscores the growing role of unmanned systems in maritime operations.

Underwater drones allow militaries to send sensors into areas that could be dangerous for crewed vessels. They can also perform repetitive surveillance and mapping tasks for long periods without putting sailors directly in harm’s way.

But operating such systems in a heavily contested waterway creates another risk: the unmanned vehicle itself can become an object of confrontation.

The two reported incidents in September also show how differently the same event can be framed by opposing sides. Iran has portrayed the seizures as evidence of its ability to detect and capture sophisticated U.S. systems. U.S. officials, in the earlier case, char
