The Ultimate Water Showdown: Event Categories

Red Bull Vallam Vali isn’t a standard sprint to the finish line. It takes the rhythmic beauty of Vallamkali (boat racing) and injects it with the combative spirit of Vadam Vali (tug-of-war) across two grueling categories:

1. The Chundan Vallam Row Off

Prepare for a colossal tug-of-war on water. This category features the legendary Chundan Vallam—a massive 100-foot snake boat famous for its use in Kerala’s globally renowned Onam festival races. Two powerhouse teams of 80 oarsmen each will sit in the same boat, rowing fiercely in opposite directions to drag their opponents across the center line.

2. The Iruttukuthy / Churulan Vallam Row Off

Known for their incredible speed and agility on still water, Churulan Vallams are traditional sport boats. In this category, two teams of 25 rowers will compete head-to-head on a single boat. It is a pure test of raw power, endurance, and perfect synchronization to out-muscle the opposing crew.

The Historic Legacy of Gothuruth

The choice of venue for the 2026 showdown is deeply rooted in history. The Gothuruth Vallamkali is one of the oldest traditional boat races in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, first held in 1938. Held annually in September on the Periyar River, Gothuruth is a long-standing celebration where sporting competition beautifully intertwines with cultural and religious traditions. Now, this historic stretch of water will host the ultimate modern clash of titans.

Why You Need to Be There

Following the massive success of the 2025 edition—which saw the Ashtamudi Acers take home the championship crown- the 2026 event promises to be bigger, louder, and more intense. Red Bull Vallam Vali combines the visual majesty of traditional Kerala boat races with edge-of-your-seat sporting action.

Be there to witness the roaring crowds, the rhythmic splashing of hundreds of oars, and a celebration of Kerala’s heritage infused with an unmatched shot of adrenaline.
