The Metropolitan Museum of Art and John Galliano have abandoned plans for the designer’s planned 2027 Costume Institute exhibition, ending a controversial proposal that would have made his work the focus of next year’s Met Gala.

The museum and Galliano announced the decision jointly on August 31, saying the exhibition, titled “John Galliano: Horizons,” would not proceed as planned. The show had been scheduled to open in May 2027 and examine roughly four decades of Galliano’s fashion career.

The cancellation follows intense criticism over Galliano’s history of antisemitic and racist remarks, particularly his 2011 conviction in France after a series of incidents in Paris.

Galliano himself asked that the exhibition not go ahead at this time, saying he did not want controversy surrounding his past to overshadow the Costume Institute or cause additional pain to communities he had hurt.

The Met Gala itself is not being canceled. Instead, its planned Galliano-centered theme has been scrapped, and the museum says details of a replacement spring exhibition and the 2027 gala will be announced later.

Why was the John Galliano Met Gala theme canceled?

The controversy centered on whether the Metropolitan Museum should devote one of its most prominent annual cultural events to a designer whose career includes a well-documented history of offensive conduct.

When “John Galliano: Horizons” was announced in July, the planned exhibition was presented as an examination of the designer’s four-decade career and artistic influence.

But the decision immediately drew criticism because Galliano’s career cannot easily be separated from the events that led to his dismissal from Christian Dior and his 2011 conviction.

The backlash intensified in the weeks after the announcement, with critics arguing that a major institutional honor could appear to minimize or overshadow the harm caused by his past remarks.

The Met ultimately announced that the exhibition would not move forward after discussions with Galliano and other stakeholders.

What did John Galliano say about the cancellation?

John Galliano said he was grateful to the Met for proposing an exhibition devoted to his work but concluded, after reflection and discussions with the museum, that it was better not to proceed at this time.

He also explicitly acknowledged the harm caused by his past words.

Galliano said he remained accountable for the pain caused to Jewish and Asian communities and that genuine atonement could not be achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition or a single public gesture.

Instead, he described accountability as an ongoing responsibility demonstrated through listening, learning and conduct over time.

He also said he did not want the controversy surrounding him to put the Met in a difficult position or distract attention from the Costume Institute’s work.

That framing is important because the cancellation was presented publicly as a mutual decision, rather than a museum simply removing Galliano against his wishes.

What did the Met say about the decision?

Met Director and CEO Max Hollein said that, following discussions with Galliano, the museum and designer had jointly decided not to proceed.

Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator in charge, also supported the decision.

Bolton said museums have a responsibility to examine difficult histories with rigor and honesty, while recognizing the pain and concerns the planned exhibition had generated.

The museum’s position reflects the complicated role cultural institutions play when an artist or designer has both an extraordinary creative legacy and a deeply controversial personal history.

The question was not simply whether Galliano had influenced fashion. His influence is widely acknowledged.

The harder question was whether the Met should celebrate that influence through a major retrospective at this particular moment.

What did John Galliano do in 2011?

The controversy goes back to incidents in Paris in 2010 and 2011.

In one widely publicized incident at a Paris café, Galliano was recorded making antisemitic remarks, including a statement expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler.

The video became public in 2011, triggering international outrage.

Dior subsequently dismissed Galliano from his position as the brand’s creative director.

A French court later convicted him of making racist and antisemitic public insults and fined him.

Galliano has since repeatedly apologized and has spoken publicly about his recovery from alcoholism and addiction.

He has also attempted to rebuild his career, eventually returning to major fashion houses and becoming creative director of Maison Margiela.

Why is John Galliano so important to fashion?

The controversy exists partly because Galliano’s influence on fashion is enormous.

He emerged as a major talent after graduating from Central Saint Martins in London in 1984. His graduation collection, “Les Incroyables,” established a distinctive approach built around historical references, theatricality and elaborate storytelling.

He later became creative director at Givenchy and then Christian Dior, where his runway shows became among the most anticipated events in the fashion calendar.

His work at Dior helped redefine what a major fashion presentation could look like, blending couture techniques with elaborate narrative worlds.

At Maison Margiela, he later reinvented himself through a radically different aesthetic, producing influential collections that further cemented his reputation as one of fashion’s most technically accomplished and imaginative designers.

That legacy is why the Met originally wanted to dedicate an entire Costume Institute exhibition to his work.

What was “John Galliano: Horizons” supposed to be?

The proposed exhibition was intended to cover around 40 years of Galliano’s career.

It would have included garments, accessories, sketches, prototypes, research books and archival materials spanning his career from his Central Saint Martins graduation collection through his work at Givenchy, Dior and Maison Margiela.

The exhibition would also have been historically significant.

Only two other living designers had previously received solo monographic exhibitions at the Costume Institute: Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons in 2017.

Galliano’s planned retrospective would therefore have placed him in a very small group of designers whose work the Met considered significant enough to receive such treatment.

Why did the backlash become so intense?

The controversy went beyond discussions among fashion critics.

New York political divs, Jewish community representatives and others publicly questioned whether honoring Galliano was appropriate given his past.

One concern was that the proposed celebration risked turning a complicated story of talent, wrongdoing, apology and rehabilitation into a straightforward narrative of artistic triumph.

Another issue was timing.

The 2027 Met Gala was originally scheduled for May 3, 2027, with the “Horizons” exhibition opening several days later. The date also generated additional discussion because it falls around Yom HaShoah, Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day.

The combination of Galliano’s history, the proposed institutional honor and the timing became increasingly difficult for the museum to navigate.

Did Anna Wintour support John Galliano?

Yes.

Anna Wintour, the longtime Vogue editor and influential div behind the Met Gala, publicly backed Galliano’s decision to withdraw the exhibition.

Wintour described the decision as courageous and said she believed it was the right one.

She has remained one of Galliano’s prominent supporters in the fashion world and has continued to recognize his creative influence despite the controversy surrounding his past.

Wintour’s support also illustrates the complicated divide within the fashion industry.

Some divs have argued that Galliano’s years of sobriety, apology and professional rehabilitation should matter when assessing his career. Others believe that institutional honors require a different standard because they publicly confer prestige and recognition.

Did the Met try to address the controversy before canceling the show?

Yes.

The museum had indicated after the initial announcement that it was taking concerns seriously and consulting with community leaders and other stakeholders.

According to reporting from the fashion press, conversations also took place involving Galliano and Jewish leaders in an effort to address the controversy.

Those discussions ultimately did not resolve the concerns surrounding the exhibition.

The cancellation therefore came after weeks of public debate rather than as an immediate reaction to the initial announcement.

Is the 2027 Met Gala canceled?

No.

This is one of the most important distinctions in the story.

The Met has canceled the planned “John Galliano: Horizons” exhibition and, consequently, the Galliano-centered concept for the 2027 gala.

But the annual Met Gala itself remains scheduled.

The museum has said that information about a new spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and the associated gala will be announced later.

The new exhibition will determine the gala’s theme and dress expectations, as the annual fundraiser traditionally serves as the opening event for the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition.

What happens to the 2027 Met Gala now?

The Met now has to find a new subject for its spring 2027 exhibition and gala.

That is a significant change because the original Galliano plan had already been publicly announced, meaning curatorial work, loans and fashion-industry expectations were likely well underway.

The replacement will need to be chosen relatively quickly while maintaining the Costume Institute’s role as one of the world’s most influential fashion exhibitions.

It also presents the Met with an opportunity to shift the conversation away from an individual designer and toward another aspect of fashion history.

For the fashion world, the eventual replacement theme will be closely watched because the Met Gala remains one of the industry’s biggest global stages.

What does Galliano’s withdrawal mean for his legacy?

The cancellation does not erase Galliano’s influence on fashion.

His work remains part of fashion history, and the techniques, silhouettes, theatrical presentations and craftsmanship associated with his career will continue to be studied and exhibited.

But the episode demonstrates that artistic achievement and institutional recognition are not necessarily the same thing.

A museum can acknowledge an artist’s historical importance without necessarily deciding that this is the right moment to celebrate that person through its most visible annual event.

That distinction is at the heart of the Galliano controversy.

The bigger question: Can artists be separated from their past?

The Met’s decision revives a question that museums, galleries and cultural institutions have repeatedly faced.

What should happen when an artist’s creative contribution is significant but their personal conduct has caused serious harm?

There is no universal answer.

Supporters of Galliano’s rehabilitation point to his years of sobriety, public apologies and continued professional work. Critics argue that a prestigious retrospective is not merely an academic assessment of influence. It is also an act of institutional endorsement.

John Galliano himself appeared to acknowledge that tension in his withdrawal statement.

He said meaningful atonement is a continuing responsibility rather than something that can be resolved through a public honor.

The bottom line

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and John Galliano have jointly canceled “John Galliano: Horizons,” the planned Costume Institute exhibition that was set to anchor the 2027 Met Gala.

The decision follows intense backlash over Galliano’s antisemitic and racist remarks that led to his 2011 conviction in France and his dismissal from Dior.

John Galliano said he remains accountable for the harm he caused and did not want the controversy to distract from the Costume Institute’s work or cause further pain.

Anna Wintour, Max Hollein and Andrew Bolton have all publicly supported the decision.

The 2027 Met Gala itself will still take place. What has changed is its planned subject.

The Met now has to choose a new spring exhibition and gala theme, leaving one of fashion’s most anticipated nights with an unusual blank space where Galliano’s name once stood.
