Two Gettysburg College students have been suspended from the swim team following an incident where one student reportedly carved a racial slur into another student’s chest using a box cutter. The college is investigating the event, which occurred during a social gathering. The victim’s family, describing the act as a “hate crime,” has filed complaints with the NAACP and state authorities. College President Robert Iuliano condemned the incident, stating, “There is no place on this campus for words or actions that demean, degrade, or marginalize based on one’s identity.”
The college is currently addressing the case through its internal conduct process, although the victim was encouraged to escalate it to the police. The victim’s family is pursuing legal action, citing racial discrimination and harassment. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice across the college community.
In a statement, the student’s family expressed profound disappointment, highlighting that the victim was the only person of color at the event. They described the attack as an egregious violation of trust, committed by someone the victim considered a friend. Despite the trauma, the family noted their son has chosen “not to return the hate.”
