Cloudflare Just Fired 1,100 Workers While Posting Record Revenue, and the CEO Says AI Made Their Jobs Obsolete

For the first time in tech history, a major company has said the quiet part out loud: AI didn’t assist a layoff. AI caused it.
Cloudflare, the cybersecurity and internet infrastructure giant that protects millions of websites worldwide, announced on Thursday, May 8, that it is cutting approximately 1,100 employees, roughly 20% of its entire workforce. The cuts span engineering, HR, finance, and marketing, sparing only quota-carrying salespeople.
The announcement landed alongside Cloudflare’s Q1 2026 earnings report, which showed quarterly revenue of $639.8 million, a 34% year-over-year increase and the highest single quarter in the company’s 16-year history. The company also reported over $2.5 billion in remaining performance obligations, indicating strong future revenue under contract.

CEO Matthew Prince and COO Michelle Zatlyn framed the cuts not as cost reduction but as structural transformation. In a company blog post, they wrote that the layoffs are about “Cloudflare defining how a world-class, high-growth company operates and creates value in the agentic AI era.” Prince added on the earnings call that it marked the first mass layoff in Cloudflare’s history.
Prince’s claim that employees are now 2x to 100x more productive deserves scrutiny. If AI truly made the average Cloudflare employee orders of magnitude more efficient, the company should be seeing margin expansion, not widening losses. Cloudflare lost $62 million in Q1 2026, up from $53.2 million a year earlier.
This suggests one of two things: either the AI-driven productivity gains are real but haven’t yet translated to bottom-line results, or the gains are being overstated to justify workforce reductions that are ultimately about cost discipline. The truth is likely somewhere in between. AI has genuinely changed how work gets done at Cloudflare, but the 600% usage increase and “100x productivity” claims are doing heavy lifting as narrative cover.

Prince himself hinted at the tension when an analyst asked why the company needed to cut so deeply after a strong quarter. His response was revealing: “Just because you’re fit doesn’t mean you can’t get fitter.”
Cloudflare’s cuts weren’t concentrated in a single department. They hit engineering, HR, finance, and marketing — the support infrastructure that exists behind revenue-generating roles. The message to the broader workforce is stark: if your job is to support people who build or sell things, AI is coming for your role faster than it’s coming for the builders and sellers themselves.
Prince even said he expects Cloudflare to have more employees in 2027 than at any point in 2026, but those new hires will be people who know how to work with AI, not people who do work that AI can now handle.

Watch for the ripple effect. Cloudflare’s explicit “AI made these jobs obsolete” framing gives cover to every tech company planning layoffs in Q2 and Q3. PayPal has already announced plans to cut 20% of its workforce over the next two to three years with similar AI justification. Coinbase cut 14% of staff in the same week.
The critical question for the industry is whether this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: as more companies frame layoffs as AI-driven structural change rather than cyclical cost cuts, the pressure on remaining employees to demonstrate AI adoption intensifies, which in turn accelerates the displacement of roles that haven’t adapted.
For Cloudflare specifically, the next two quarters will be the test. If the company can maintain 30%+ revenue growth with 20% fewer people, it validates the model. If growth slows or customer satisfaction dips, the narrative collapses.
Why did Cloudflare lay off 1,100 workers during record revenue? CEO Matthew Prince said AI made these support roles obsolete. Internal AI usage increased 600% in three months, making employees significantly more productive and reducing the need for support staff in engineering, HR, finance, and marketing. The company framed it as a structural transformation, not cost-cutting.
How much severance are Cloudflare employees getting? Laid-off workers receive full pay through the end of 2026, healthcare benefits through year-end for U.S. employees, and continued equity vesting through August 15. The company expects $140-150 million in total restructuring costs, mostly tied to these severance packages.
Is Cloudflare the first company to explicitly blame AI for layoffs? It’s the most explicit case to date. While Meta, Google, and Amazon have cited AI efficiency in previous layoff announcements, Cloudflare’s CEO directly stated that AI made 1,100 jobs obsolete and that the company needs to be “architected for the agentic AI era.” This framing is expected to become a template for other companies.
