Why Greenland’s Mineral Wealth May Not Deliver the Economic Boom Many Expect
January 13, 2026
11:00
Greenland’s vast natural resources have once again drawn global attention, with the US, the European Union, and China all watching the Arctic island closely. On paper, Greenland looks like a treasure chest: it holds at least 25 of the 34 raw materials the EU considers critical, along with offshore oil and gas reserves spread across its eastern and western coasts. But abundance does not automatically mean wealth.
In reality, Greenland’s natural resources are unlikely to deliver massive profits anytime soon. Geography, infrastructure gaps, political choices, and high financial risk all stand between what lies underground and what can realistically be turned into revenue. Understanding why requires looking beyond geology and into economics, governance, and geopolitics.
Greenland sits on a rare concentration of materials that modern economies depend on. These include rare earth elements used in electric vehicles and wind turbines, graphite and lithium for batteries, and other minerals essential for advanced electronics and defense technologies.

The European Union has listed many of these as “critical raw materials” under its 2024 Critical Raw Materials Act, which aims to reduce reliance on China-dominated supply chains. The US shares the same concern, particularly as competition over semiconductors, clean energy, and military technology intensifies.
Oil and gas add another layer of interest. Geological surveys suggest large offshore reserves, raising long-standing speculation that Greenland could one day become an energy producer.
Outside the capital, Nuuk, Greenland has virtually no road network connecting towns or resource sites. Deep-water ports capable of handling large cargo ships and tankers are scarce. Power generation is limited and often localized.

In most mining regions around the world, companies rely on existing public infrastructure to cut costs. Roads, ports, housing, and skilled labor already exist. In Greenland, much of this would need to be built from scratch before the first truckload of minerals could leave the ground.
That upfront investment runs into billions of dollars long before a project earns a single dollar.
Mining and fossil fuel projects are expensive everywhere. In Greenland, they are especially so.

Harsh Arctic conditions shorten construction seasons, damage equipment, and raise safety costs. Ice, storms, and extreme cold complicate transport and logistics. Projects also face long lead times, meaning investors may wait a decade or more before seeing returns.
This makes Greenland far less attractive than regions where similar minerals can be extracted faster and cheaper.
The value of critical minerals and oil fluctuates widely. A project that looks profitable today may become unviable if prices fall by the time production begins.

This uncertainty makes it harder to justify massive investments in Greenland, especially when companies can pursue lower-risk projects elsewhere.
Greenland’s government faces a classic resource dilemma. It can allow foreign multinationals to extract resources quickly but risk losing most of the profits. Or it can insist on strong state ownership and control, but struggle to raise the capital and expertise needed to make projects viable.
The issue is especially sensitive because natural resources are closely tied to Greenland’s push for greater autonomy from Denmark. Greenland formally owns its underground resources, but Denmark still provides an annual block grant of about 3.9 billion kroner, which covers roughly half of Greenland’s public budget.

Under existing agreements, Denmark reduces its block grant by 50 percent of any mining profits. In practice, this means mining revenues are split between Greenland and Denmark until the value of the block grant is reached.
Greenland’s mineral wealth has been known for decades. In 2025, a documentary by Danish broadcaster DR reignited debate by showing how Denmark historically extracted profits from a cryolite mine in Greenland. The fallout triggered political controversy and reshaped public discussion about Greenland’s economic dependence.
Despite repeated attempts by foreign firms to establish mining operations, commercial success has been limited. Capital intensity and climate challenges have consistently outweighed expected returns.

Contrary to claims by US President Donald Trump, American companies have long had access to Greenland’s mining sector. The issue has never been access. It has been feasible.
In 2021, Greenland’s Inuit Ataqatigiit-led government banned uranium mining due to environmental and public health concerns. This decision halted the controversial Kuannersuit, also known as Kvanefjeld, project.
Australian firm Energy Transitions Minerals later sued Greenland and Denmark for 76 billion kroner, nearly four times Greenland’s GDP, claiming lost future profits. Danish courts have dismissed most of the claims as baseless, highlighting how speculative many mining profit estimates can be.

The same year, Greenland also banned fossil fuel exploration and extraction. A parliamentary majority continues to support the ban, making oil and gas production unlikely even if prices rise.
This environmental stance reflects public opinion in Greenland, where fishing remains the backbone of the economy and ecological damage could threaten livelihoods.
There are signs of limited movement. The company Critical Metals recently received approval to establish a permanent office for its Tanbreez rare earth project in southern Greenland. Shortly after, mining firm Amaroq said the US is considering supporting its Greenland projects through EXIM, the US Export-Import Bank.

If approved, such financing would mark the first US state-backed loan to an overseas mining project under the current administration. It follows an executive order setting aside US$5 billion for mining projects deemed critical to national security.
Still, these are early steps, not evidence of a full-scale resource boom.
Much of the renewed US interest in Greenland has less to do with immediate resource extraction and more to do with Arctic strategy. Control over shipping lanes, proximity to Russia and China, and military positioning all matter more in the short term than mining revenues.

The US already maintains military bases in Greenland under a defense agreement with Denmark. As a result, resource extraction is unlikely to be the central motivation behind Washington’s Arctic focus.
Instead, Greenland fits into a broader effort to counter Chinese influence in critical supply chains and assert strategic presence in the Arctic.
Greenland’s leaders are realistic about the limits of resource wealth. As Natural Resources Minister Naaja Nathanielsen said in 2025, mining should become a stable supplement to the economy, not its foundation.
Fishing remains the country’s economic core, providing jobs, exports, and food security. Any mining or mineral extraction that does occur is likely to be slow, tightly regulated, and politically contested.
For now, Greenland’s vast natural resources represent potential rather than profit.
Greenland holds some of the world’s most sought-after natural resources, but turning them into wealth is far from guaranteed. Extreme infrastructure costs, harsh climate, volatile prices, environmental bans, and political constraints all limit profitability. While global powers are paying close attention to Greenland, its strategic location matters far more than the minerals beneath its ice.
