Nearly 100,000 residents across Pennsylvania have received an unexpected envelope in the mail this year, and for once, it is not a scam. The state has confirmed that it has mailed checks worth more than $22 million under its Money Match program, a system designed to return unclaimed property automatically, without requiring people to file paperwork.

The payments mark the first full year of the program and reflect a major shift in how the state handles forgotten or abandoned assets.

What is Pennsylvania’s Money Match program?

Money Match is an initiative launched by the Pennsylvania Treasury in 2024 to simplify the return of certain types of unclaimed property. Traditionally, residents had to search the state’s unclaimed property database, submit documentation, and wait months for approval. Many never did, leaving billions of dollars sitting with the state.

Under Money Match, the process is reversed. If the Treasury can clearly verify ownership, it sends the money directly to the resident.

The state issues a check automatically when the case meets all eligibility requirements.

Why are people receiving checks without applying?

Unclaimed property builds up quietly. Dormant bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, forgotten insurance payouts, abandoned stocks, unused rebates, and similar assets are eventually transferred to the state when owners cannot be located.

In straightforward cases, the Treasury now matches records using name, address, and other identifiers. If ownership is clear and the amount is small, the state mails the check without requiring the resident to take any action.

For many recipients, the arrival of the check has been a complete surprise.

Who qualifies for a Money Match check?

Not all unclaimed property is eligible. The program applies only to simple, low-risk cases.

To qualify, the unclaimed property must meet the following conditions:

• The value is $500 or less
• The property is linked to a single individual
• Ownership can be verified without additional documentation
• There are no competing claims

If all conditions are met, the Treasury sends a check directly to the last known address.

Anything more complex still requires a traditional claim.

Is the check legitimate?

State officials say residents should not be suspicious.

Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity has publicly emphasized that the checks are real and belong to the recipients.

In a statement addressing concerns, she said the payments represent real money that residents earned or were entitled to and urged people not to discard them as junk mail.

The Treasury has also advised recipients to deposit or cash the checks promptly, noting that leaving them unused defeats the purpose of the program.

How much money has been returned so far?

The program has exceeded expectations.

According to the Treasury Department, Money Match has already returned more than $50 million statewide, well above initial projections for its first year. The nearly $22 million sent to about 100,000 residents represents a significant portion of that total.

Officials say the success shows how much unclaimed money was previously going untouched simply because the process to recover it was too complicated.

Why many residents will still not receive a check

Despite the scale of the rollout, Money Match only covers a fraction of unclaimed property cases.

Pennsylvania currently holds an estimated $5 billion in unclaimed assets. Treasury officials say more than 10 percent of residents may be entitled to money, but most will not qualify for automatic payments.

You will still need to file a claim if:

• The amount exceeds $500
• The property involves multiple owners or heirs
• Additional proof of identity or ownership is required
• The address on file is outdated

State officials continue to encourage residents to search the unclaimed property database regularly, even if they did not receive a Money Match check.

Unclaimed property programs exist in every state, but participation is often low because the process feels confusing or time-consuming. Money Match removes that barrier for simple cases and puts money back into residents’ hands without effort on their part.

For policymakers, it also reduces administrative backlogs and improves public trust by showing that the state is actively working to return money, not hold onto it.

If you received a check, deposit or cash it as soon as possible.

If you did not, officials say that does not mean you are not owed money. Searching the state’s unclaimed property database remains the only way to recover funds that fall outside Money Match eligibility.

Given the billions still unclaimed, the Treasury says many Pennsylvanians may be surprised by what they find.
