For nearly two years, 29-year-old Allie Latic did everything job experts say you’re supposed to do: tailor every résumé, customize every cover letter, optimize for ATS filters, network constantly, track applications in spreadsheets, and show up to interviews ready for anything.

None of it worked.

By July 2025, after applying to more than 500 jobs across 800 days, the Chicago woman still had no offer. What finally changed her luck wasn’t a recruiter, a referral, or a résumé rewrite.

It was a meme.

What happened during her two-year job search?

Latic earned her master’s degree in library and information science in May 2023 and immediately joined the job market. She told Business Insider she followed every traditional guideline and still struggled to get responses, let alone offers.

After taking time off for her wedding, Latic decided to shift tactics entirely. On Canva, she threw together what she jokingly called a “resume meme.”

One message came from the owner of a boudoir photography studio who said the meme felt authentic and human in a way most résumés don’t.

By the end of July 2025, Latic accepted a part-time manager role at that studio, where she now handles client experience, writes blogs, manages sales, and supports operations.

Even though it’s unrelated to library science, she says the job is aligned with her strengths in communication, empathy, and information management, and that it’s the healthiest work environment she has ever had.
