Trump-branded wines and ciders have appeared on the shelves of Coast Guard-run duty-free stores in Washington, D.C., and Centreville, Virginia, just in time for the holiday season. While administration officials insist the sales are legal, ethics watchdogs are questioning whether the move blurs the line between business and public office.

What happened: Trump-branded alcohol at military exchanges

An image shared by an anonymous whistleblower, reportedly a Homeland Security employee, first brought the issue to light. The photo, posted on Instagram, showed bottles of Trump-branded wine and cider displayed prominently on a promotional table at a Coast Guard Exchange store.

The revelation quickly drew attention online, with critics pointing to possible conflicts of interest given President Donald Trump’s business empire and his role as Commander in Chief.

Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin confirmed the sale of the products, saying, “The brave men and women of the USCG are pleased to be able to buy Trump wine and cider tax-free.”

The legal position: No direct violation, officials say

Administration officials have defended the move, stating that the sales do not breach any law. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the wines and ciders were supplied under a standard licensing arrangement. The President, they insist, played no direct role in the sales or distribution process.

Still, the optics have raised eyebrows. The Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution prohibits the president from receiving gifts or benefits from the government beyond their official salary. However, legal experts note that both the president and vice president are largely exempt from most federal ethics rules governing other officials.

As Jordan Libowitz, a spokesperson for the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), told Forbes:

“This is one of those things where there probably isn’t any legal issue, but there is an optics and ethics issue. People might believe that the president is personally benefiting from this.”

Libowitz added that while the Constitution offers limited recourse for such situations, the broader concern is about perception:

“You don’t want to see the military essentially playing sides. Are they going to try to make money for other presidents? It’s a weird thing.”

Why it matters: The ethics and optics question

While Trump-branded merchandise, from hats to golf tees, has long been part of the former president’s commercial brand, the placement of such products in military stores is a more delicate matter.

Unlike civilian retailers, Coast Guard Exchanges and other military-operated stores are government-run entities. The products sold there often carry symbolic weight, as they cater to servicemembers and their families.

Critics argue that stocking Trump-branded products could give the impression that the U.S. military is indirectly promoting the president’s private business interests.

Ethics experts note that even if no money directly flows to the president from these sales, the brand exposure alone could serve as implicit promotion, an advantage not available to other political divs.

A growing business empire

Despite repeated controversies over his private ventures, President Trump’s business portfolio appears to be thriving.

According to Forbes, Trump’s net worth has doubled to $6.5 billion since returning to the White House. His online marketplace, TrumpStore.com, now lists nearly 50 presidential-themed items, ranging from branded apparel to collectible coins.

Just last week, the Trump Organization announced the launch of a second-edition “Presidential Silver Coin” priced as high as $460, marketed as a limited-edition collector’s item.

Observers say the timing of the wine rollout at military stores, just weeks before the holidays, is likely part of a broader commercial push.

Public perception and political implications

For Trump’s supporters, the controversy is overstated. They argue that the wines, like any other licensed product, are part of a legal, market-driven arrangement.

But for opponents and ethics experts, the issue goes beyond legality. It touches on the recurring theme of blurred boundaries between Trump’s political office and personal businesses, a concern that shadowed his previous term as well.

The renewed focus on Trump-branded products in government-related spaces may revive debates about whether stronger conflict-of-interest safeguards are needed for presidents with vast private holdings.

As CREW and other watchdogs have long emphasized, the appearance of impropriety can be as damaging to public trust as an actual violation.

The bigger picture: A test of norms

This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of separating the Trump brand from the Trump presidency. While legal experts say the sales likely fall within permissible boundaries, the ethical gray area remains vast.

The matter also reignites discussions about whether existing ethics laws and disclosure rules adequately cover modern presidencies — especially for leaders who continue to hold or license business interests while in office.

For now, the Coast Guard has not indicated any plans to pull the Trump-branded products from its stores. But the debate, much like Trump’s business interests, shows no signs of fading soon.
