How a Louvre bystander became an overnight global enigma

For weeks, the internet obsessed over a sharply dressed stranger in a viral photo taken outside the Louvre on the day of the $102 million crown jewels heist. Dubbed “Fedora Man,” he became the center of wild speculation: was he a detective, an art thief, or even an AI-generated illusion?

Now, the mystery has been solved. The man in the photograph is Pedro Elias Garzon Delvaux, a 15-year-old student from Rambouillet, a quiet town west of Paris.

When Pedro realized his picture had gone viral, he didn’t rush to claim the fame. Instead, in true detective fashion, he decided to let the mystery linger.

“With this photo there is a mystery,” he said. “So you have to make it last.”

The photo that fooled the world

The now-iconic image was snapped by Associated Press photographer Thibault Camus on October 19, hours after a gang of thieves executed a daring daylight robbery at the Louvre.

In the foreground, three police officers lean against a silver car blocking the entrance. To the right, Pedro, dressed in a vintage ensemble complete with a fedora, waistcoat, and tie, strides past, his gaze fixed forward.

The photo was intended to document a tense crime scene. Instead, it captured a tableau that felt straight out of film noir.

Within hours, the image was everywhere: reposted on Reddit, dissected on TikTok, and debated in AI forums. Some users were convinced the div was computer-generated, while others spun elaborate theories about a mysterious insider returning to the scene of the crime.

Behind the mystery: A quiet afternoon gone viral

Pedro was no detective, just a teenager on a family outing. He, his mother, and his grandfather had planned to visit the Louvre that Sunday.

“We wanted to go to the Louvre, but it was closed,” he recalled. “We didn’t know there was a heist.”

As they approached, the police stopped them at the barricade. Moments later, Camus’s camera clicked.

“When the picture was taken, I didn’t know,” Pedro said. “I was just passing through.”

Days later, a friend messaged him a screenshot. “She told me there were 5 million views,” he said, laughing. Then came a call from his mother: You’re in The New York Times.

Soon, cousins from Colombia, classmates, and even teachers were sending him screenshots of his newfound fame.

“People said, ‘You’ve become a star,’” Pedro said. “I was astonished that just with one photo you can become viral in a few days.”

The style that sparked the sensation

Pedro’s look, crisp shirt, tailored vest, fedora tilted at just the right angle, wasn’t an act. It’s his everyday style.

“I like to be chic,” he said. “I go to school like this.”

Inspired by old photographs of statesmen and detectives, Pedro adopted 1940s fashion less than a year ago. His icons include Hercule Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, and Jean Moulin, the French Resistance hero whose trademark fedora Pedro wears as homage.

His wardrobe is a family collaboration; his father lends him waistcoats, his mother helps pick jackets, and his restored Russian wristwatch once survived a war.

At his school, where most students dress in hoodies and sneakers, Pedro stands out and inspires.

“One of my friends came this week with a tie,” he said proudly.

The myth of Fedora Man

The internet’s fascination with Pedro reveals as much about our times as it does about him. In an era of AI-generated fakes and deepfake paranoia, his image seemed too cinematic, too perfect to be real.

“In the photo, I’m dressed more in the 1940s, and we are in 2025,” Pedro said. “There is a contrast.”

That contrast between timeless elegance and modern chaos turned an ordinary moment into a digital myth.

Even Pedro’s relatives hesitated at first. “Only when they saw my mother in the background did they believe it was me,” he said, laughing.

After days of speculation, Pedro finally decided to step forward. He switched his Instagram account to public and confirmed his identity.

“People had to try to find who I am,” he said. “Then journalists came, and I told them my age. They were extremely surprised.”

Art, family, and a flair for the dramatic

Pedro’s love of art runs deep. His mother, Félicité Garzon Delvaux, grew up in an 18th-century museum-palace and now works in the arts. His grandfather is a frequent museum companion.

“Art and museums are living spaces,” his mother said. “Life without art is not life.”

That philosophy has clearly shaped Pedro’s outlook. When millions projected stories onto that single photo, he recognized what was happening — and let the narrative breathe.

“I knew it was becoming a mystery,” he said. “So I let people imagine.”

From viral fame to film dreams

Pedro doesn’t seem overwhelmed by his sudden celebrity. If anything, he’s amused and perhaps a little curious about what might come next.

“I’m waiting for people to contact me for films,” he joked. “That would be very funny.”

Whether or not Hollywood calls, “Fedora Man” has already become a gentle counterpoint to the heist he unwittingly witnessed a reminder that even amid stories of theft and chaos, mystery and style can still enchant the world.

“I’ll keep dressing like this,” he said. “It’s my style.”

TL;DR

The mysterious “Fedora Man” spotted at the Louvre during the crown jewels heist has been identified as 15-year-old Pedro Elias Garzon Delvaux, a student from Rambouillet, France. His classic 1940s look, complete with a fedora and waistcoat, sparked global intrigue and AI conspiracy theories. Far from a thief or detective, Pedro was simply a stylish teen visiting the museum with his family.
