Trump’s rare NFL appearance draws mixed reaction

President Donald Trump made history on Sunday by becoming the first sitting US president since 1978 to attend a regular-season NFL game. Things are going along very well. The country’s doing well,” he said, before adding, “The Democrats have to open it up,” referring to the ongoing government shutdown.

The Detroit Lions ultimately defeated the Commanders 44–22.

Athletes and coaches react

Before Trump’s arrival, Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown celebrated a touchdown with what he called the “Trump dance,” a gesture popularized by athletes last year. “I heard Trump was going to be at the game,” St. Brown said afterward. “I don’t know how many times the president’s going to be at a game, so just decided to have some fun.”

Lions coach Dan Campbell said he hadn’t noticed the president’s presence during the game but added, “That’s cool. … You’re talking about the president of the United States. That’s a big deal.”

Quarterback Jared Goff remarked on seeing Air Force One fly low over the stadium, calling it “awesome.”

Trump joins Fox broadcast booth

During the third quarter, Trump joined Fox Sports commentators Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma for a brief eight-minute segment. He reflected on his high school football days at the New York Military Academy, recalling, “I played tight end, but it was not quite football like this. It was a little bit easier.”

Trump left the stadium before the game ended.

Historic presidential visit

According to the NFL, only two other sitting presidents have attended regular-season games: Richard Nixon in 1969 and Jimmy Carter in 1978. Trump also made history earlier this year as the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl, when he watched the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 40–22 in February.

Reports from ESPN indicated that a White House intermediary recently approached Commanders’ ownership with the idea of naming their planned $4 billion stadium project after Trump. The president confirmed his involvement during Sunday’s broadcast, saying, “They’re going to build a beautiful stadium. … You have a wonderful owner, Josh Harris, and you’re going to see some very good things.”

From past friction to renewed visibility

Trump’s latest sports appearance follows several others this year, including at the Ryder Cup, Daytona 500, and US Open. “I just love it,” Trump told Fox. “It’s a microcosm of life — the good, the bad, and the ugly.”

Yet the event also revived memories of his past conflict with the NFL. During his first term, Trump fiercely criticized players kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice — a movement started by Colin Kaepernick in 2016. He called on team owners to fire players who refused to stand.

Now, nearly a decade later, Trump’s relationship with the league remains complicated: part admiration for American sports, part echo of political tension that continues to play out on and off the field.
