TL;DR

New York’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, met his wife, artist Rama Duwaji, on Hinge, a detail that’s already made him one of the internet’s most relatable politicians. But a viral TikTok post has added a twist: a woman claimed she once matched with Mamdani on the same app but didn’t reply because of his listed height. Now, the internet can’t stop talking about what might be the most amusing “missed connection” in political history.

Who Is Zohran Mamdani, and Why Is Everyone Talking About Him?

Zohran Mamdani, recently elected as New York City’s mayor, has captured public attention not just for his progressive politics but also for his effortlessly charming persona. With his easy humor, relatable presence, and heartwarming love story, Mamdani is already being dubbed “America’s most dateable mayor”—though that ship has long sailed.

His rise to fame, however, isn’t just political. It’s also deeply human. While many politicians are guarded about their private lives, Mamdani has leaned into authenticity, speaking openly about his marriage and even joking about his “Hinge success story” on a podcast earlier this year.

The TikTok That Set the Internet on Fire

The internet thrives on “what-if” moments, and this one hit all the right notes. A TikTok user recently posted a video confessing that she once matched with Zohran Mamdani on Hinge years ago, but didn’t reply because his profile listed his height as “5’10 or 5’11.”

She added that her younger self believed that meant he was probably closer to 5’9″ (a playful nod to the popular online joke that men exaggerate their height on dating apps).

In the caption, she wrote, “Fumble of the century.”

The comment section went wild.

“Imagine fumbling the future mayor of NYC because of his height,” one user quipped.

“I’m sure she cries herself to sleep most nights because this is exactly what I’d do,” another chimed in.

The post racked up thousands of likes and comments, with people calling it “the best example of hindsight regret in dating history.”

What Makes This Story So Relatable

Dating app culture is filled with quick judgments, height filters, prompt-based humor, and instant swipes. This viral moment touches on something deeper: how seemingly trivial preferences can shape life’s big “what ifs.”

And let’s be honest—there’s irony in rejecting a Hinge match who went on to become one of the most talked-about political divs in America.

Mamdani’s love story with Rama Duwaji, on the other hand, stands as proof that connection can transcend algorithms and checkboxes.

Meet the Woman Who Didn’t Swipe Left: Rama Duwaji

While TikTok was busy laughing over the “height fumble,” others were more intrigued by the woman who did capture Mamdani’s heart.

Rama Duwaji, 27, is an illustrator and visual artist based in Brooklyn. Born in Damascus, Syria, she holds a BFA in Communication Design from Virginia Commonwealth University and a master’s in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Her art, often characterized by vivid colors and cultural symbolism, reflects her experiences of identity, migration, and belonging, making her not just “the mayor’s wife” but a creative force in her own right.

The couple met on Hinge in 2021, proving the app’s tagline, “designed to be deleted,” actually works sometimes.

A “Hinge Success Story” That’s Now City Hall-Worthy

In an April podcast interview, Mamdani affectionately described his relationship as a “Hinge success story.” He laughed as he recalled their first date, adding:

“There’s still hope in those dating apps.”

The couple tied the knot in 2025, first in a civil ceremony at New York City’s Clerk’s Office, followed by a Nikah in Dubai, where Mamdani’s parents reside.

Their story is refreshingly normal, and that’s exactly why people love it. It’s not the manicured “power couple” narrative we often see in politics; it’s a modern romance rooted in real life.

Why the Internet Loves This Story

Three reasons this story exploded online:

1. The Humor: Rejecting a future mayor over a two-inch height assumption is inherently meme-worthy.
2. The Relatability: Almost everyone has a dating-app “fumble” they regret—or laugh about later.
3. The Hope: Amid cynicism about modern dating, Zohran and Rama’s relationship feels like a real-life rom-com ending.

This blend of irony and optimism is internet gold. It’s the kind of story people share not because it’s scandalous, but because it feels human.

What This Means for Dating Apps (and Politics)

It’s not every day that a politician becomes a pop culture moment on TikTok. But Mamdani’s story reminds us that public divs can—and perhaps should—embrace vulnerability.

For dating apps like Hinge, the PR write-up practically writes itself. Expect marketing teams to subtly reference the “Mayor of NYC met his wife here” narrative in upcoming campaigns.

For politics, the takeaway is softer but just as relevant: authenticity connects.

Final Thoughts

From a “height fumble” to a viral mayoral romance, Zohran Mamdani’s story is a rare crossover between modern dating culture and political life. It’s a reminder that the path to love and leadership can start with something as simple as a swipe.

And somewhere, someone on TikTok is still wondering what might have been.
