The Human Cost of a Viral Lie

The daughter of France’s First Lady, Brigitte Macron, delivered an emotional testimony in a Paris courtroom this week, revealing the devastating personal impact of false online claims that her mother was born a man.

Tiphaine Auzière, 41, said her mother has suffered from “deep anxiety” since the conspiracy theory began circulating online in 2021 and that the relentless harassment has left lasting scars on their family.

“There isn’t a single week when she isn’t harassed,” Auzière told the court. “Not one person in her personal or professional life fails to bring up these allegations.”

She added that her 72-year-old mother has become constantly self-conscious about her clothing and the way she walks, knowing that every photo of her could be “distorted and weaponized online.”

How the Conspiracy Spread

The false claims first gained traction on fringe conspiracy websites and social media, where users falsely alleged that Brigitte Macron was born male under the name Jean-Michel Trogneux—a baseless theory that has since been repeatedly debunked.

Despite clear evidence disproving it, the rumor was amplified by far-right influencers and online accounts, especially those aligned with anti-Macron or anti-LBGTQ narratives.

By late 2021, the conspiracy had gone viral on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and Facebook, sparking widespread condemnation from journalists, fact-checkers, and political divs.

In response, Brigitte and French President Emmanuel Macron filed a defamation lawsuit in the United States earlier this year against individuals responsible for spreading the hoax.

The Trial: Ten Accused of Cyberharassment

Ten individuals are currently standing trial in Paris for what prosecutors describe as a “coordinated campaign of online harassment.”

They are accused of spreading “malicious comments” about Brigitte Macron’s gender and sexuality, turning a false rumor into a weapon of humiliation and psychological harm.

According to Auzière’s testimony, the attacks have affected three generations of their family. Her own children—Brigitte Macron’s grandchildren—are also targeted at school.

“They hear things like, ‘Your grandmother is a man,’” Auzière said. “I don’t know how to make it stop.”

A Reflection of Broader Online Abuse

The Macron case is emblematic of a disturbing global trend: how easily misinformation and gender-based attacks can spiral into targeted harassment—especially against women in public life.

Experts say that such online smears often use misogyny and transphobia as tools to discredit women’s legitimacy and authority.

In Brigitte Macron’s case, the baseless rumor was not just about identity—it was about undermining her husband’s presidency by attacking her dignity.

“Digital misogyny doesn’t always aim to convince,” said one cyber ethics researcher quoted by WION. “It aims to humiliate and exhaust.”

France’s Legal Reckoning on Online Harassment

France has been increasingly aggressive in addressing online hate and misinformation. The country’s 2018 Loi contre la manipulation de l’information (Law Against Information Manipulation) allows for swift removal of demonstrably false information during election periods.

In recent years, several public divs, including journalists, politicians, and activists, have taken legal action against cyberharassment, prompting broader debates about digital accountability and free speech.

The Macron family’s legal fight is one of the most high-profile examples yet, underlining the human cost of unchecked digital defamation.

The Human Face of Digital Hate

While Brigitte Macron has largely avoided public comment on the ordeal, Auzière’s courtroom testimony marked a rare and raw look into the emotional toll of viral lies.

She revealed that medical evaluations confirm the psychological distress caused by years of online abuse.

“She is constantly anxious,” Auzière said. “Every photo, every video becomes an opportunity for someone to distort reality.”

For the Macron family, the goal of the trial isn’t just justice—it’s to reclaim their right to live without being haunted by an internet conspiracy that refuses to die.
