Former partner says young Melania aspired to a European life in fashion before moving to America

Melania Trump, the wife of U.S. President Donald Trump, reportedly never imagined herself living in the United States during her early years in Slovenia. According to her former boyfriend, Jure Zorcic, Melania’s ambitions initially centered on a glamorous European lifestyle, rather than the American dream.

Melania’s early vision: Europe, not America

In an interview with ABC News, Zorcic revealed that Melania, who was then an aspiring model, envisioned her future in Italy or France, countries renowned for their high fashion and luxury.

“She wanted to live abroad, in Italy or France, a life of fashion,” Zorcic recalled. “She never mentioned moving to the United States. I think it was very far from our minds at that time.”

Zorcic described Melania as “very fashionable” and composed, adding that her sense of style and demeanor set her apart from others in Slovenia.

“We met each other like in a movie,” he said. “I was on a motorbike; she was walking. I was impressed by her beauty from the very first moment. She was tall, nicely dressed, and had such style; her long hair covered her face, and I could hardly see her eyes.”

From Slovenia to the White House

Melania, born Melanija Knavs in Sevnica, Slovenia, began modeling in Europe before moving to the United States in 1996. A decade later, she became a U.S. citizen in 2006, a journey that marked a sharp departure from her early European aspirations.

Her relationship with Zorcic lasted from 1991 to 1996, the same year she relocated to the U.S. to pursue her modeling career.

Zorcic said he could never have predicted her rise from a Slovenian model to the First Lady of the United States.

“Nobody believed 20 years ago that she would live at the top of the world, on Fifth Avenue in Trump Tower, even her!” he told ABC News.

Melania’s relationship and marriage to Donald Trump

Donald Trump and Melania met in September 1998 at a New York nightclub. At the time, Trump was separated but not yet divorced. Their relationship quickly attracted media attention, and after several years together, the couple married in January 2005 in a lavish ceremony at Mar-a-Lago, Palm Beach, Florida.

Melania’s $100,000 Dior wedding gown, designed by John Galliano, became one of the most talked-about bridal looks of the decade. The guest list included high-profile names such as Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barbara Walters, Billy Joel, and Tony Bennett.

Zorcic described Melania’s marriage to Trump as “fate,” suggesting that her journey from Slovenia to the world stage was both unexpected and remarkable.

From model to First Lady

Melania’s transformation from European model to U.S. First Lady remains one of the most extraordinary personal evolutions in recent American history. Despite her reserved public demeanor, she became a defining div of the Trump presidency, focusing on initiatives like “Be Best”, which promoted children’s well-being and online safety.

Though she rarely discusses her pre-America life, accounts like Zorcic’s offer a glimpse into the ambitions and mindset of a woman who would later become one of the most recognized divs in the world.
