Watch: The Exact Moment Terry Rozier Allegedly Threw a Game for $200,000: Inside the NBA’s Explosive Gambling Scandal
October 24, 2025
06:27
NBA guard Terry Rozier allegedly tipped off mob-connected gamblers about his planned early exit from a March 2023 Hornets game, sparking $200,000 in winning bets. The FBI’s probe, now the league’s biggest integrity crisis in decades, has led to Rozier’s arrest and a sweeping crackdown on illegal sports betting across pro basketball.
It started innocuously for Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier during a regular-season tilt against the New Orleans Pelicans. In the opening minutes, Rozier played with visible aggression, collecting rebounds and notching an assist. Just before the midway point of the first quarter, he sank his first basket—a crisp 15-footer from the free-throw line.
But as Rozier jogged back on defense, cameras and courtside observers noticed something off: Rozier reached for his right ankle. Nothing seemed particularly alarming at first.

Three minutes would prove pivotal. With just under three minutes left in the opening frame, Rozier threw a pass to teammate Larry Nance Jr., marking his final touch of the night. Moments later, after Brandon Ingram drilled a three, Rozier slowly walked toward the Hornets’ bench during a timeout. He would not check back into the game.
At the time, the team simply reported “right foot soreness.” Rozier’s stat line: 5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal, all within nine minutes and 34 seconds—just below the night’s prevailing player prop “Unders.”
Fast-forward to October 23, 2025: federal prosecutors, acting on months of FBI investigation, arrested Rozier in Orlando. The charges: conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering as part of a wider sports betting ring linked to New York’s infamous Bonanno and Gambino crime families.
According to indictments and DOJ officials, Rozier allegedly supplied non-public injury details and game strategy to outside contacts before the Hornets-Pelicans matchup. These mob-associated gamblers then placed over $200,000 on “Under” bets targeting Rozier’s specific stats—a coordinated spree that netted tens of thousands in illicit winnings alone.
Beneath the drama of an NBA fixture, a trail of digital breadcrumbs began to surface. The FBI’s cybercrime and sports integrity units tracked unusual betting patterns across Nevada, New Jersey, and offshore accounts. The trigger: massive same-day wagers and average betting volumes on Rozier’s unders—placed hours before tip-off.

Agents discovered that encrypted messages, later decrypted by federal authorities, referenced a “planned early exit” from a “reliable, inside source.” That source, prosecutors allege, was Rozier himself, communicating through intermediaries within the wider organized betting network.
The Department of Justice called this affair “the most direct collision of professional athlete access and organized crime in the legal betting era.” It’s the first time since the infamous Tim Donaghy referee scandal that federal prosecutors have implicated an active NBA player in alleged game outcome manipulation for profit.
Rozier isn’t alone in this scandal. Former NBA coach Chauncey Billups and ex-player Damon Jones were named in overlapping indictments, tied to separate illegal poker and betting rings involving at least five mafia families. The CBS News roll call lists 34 defendants—ranging from bookies and data analysts to alleged mob enforcers—swept up in the DOJ’s broadest-ever crackdown on sports corruption.

NBA insiders, betting consultants, and medical staffers are alleged to have leaked additional injury and lineup information to criminal operations, exploiting weaknesses in the league’s real-time data protocols.
Rozier was released on $6 million bond and immediately placed on indefinite administrative leave by the Miami Heat and the NBA. His lawyer, James Trusty, insists Rozier “maintains his innocence” and highlights that the league had initially cleared Rozier of wrongdoing in 2023—a conclusion now under review after the reopened federal inquiry.
If convicted, Rozier faces up to 25 years in federal prison. Prosecutors say more indictments could follow as investigators pursue interstate money-laundering links and off-shore sportsbook accounts.

Commissioner Adam Silver swiftly issued a special statement: “This is a wake-up call—the league’s commitment to transparency and competitive integrity must never give way to external pressures or inside influences.”
Legalized sports betting has transformed American sports, bringing new partnerships—and new risks. The Rozier saga exposes how even routine injury knowledge, if leaked, can skew markets and undermine fan trust. Analysts argue that the very systems meant to legitimize betting may also open new doors for exploitation, as “legal” prop bets mingle with shadowy, mob-linked operations.
In response, the NBA has convened an Integrity Audit Task Force. Its mandate: overhaul internal compliance, tighten data security, and retrain every player, coach, and statistician about the risks and realities of modern sports betting.
The Rozier case stands apart from past scandals. Unlike Pete Rose’s outright gambling or the Donaghy referee case, this scheme leveraged real-time injury risk and advanced analytics, weaponizing transparency itself. The price of a single tip: $200,000 in corrupt bets, untold damage to the league’s credibility, and a future where every detail—however minor—may hold million-dollar implications.
All eyes now turn to the federal courts as Rozier, Billups, and their co-defendants prepare for a high-stakes legal battle. The NBA’s forthcoming integrity reforms are destined to redraw the balance between openness for fans and secrecy to protect the game.
For the sport, the question isn’t if more scandals will surface—but how leagues, sportsbooks, and law enforcement will adapt as legal gambling’s gold rush meets the age-old lure of the inside tip.
