The late-night scare was captured on video as a clown, a nun, and a horror villain threatened to “break in and kill everyone inside.”

A widow in Alexandria, Virginia, endured a horrifying ordeal when three masked individuals, dressed as a clown, a nun, and movie villain Michael Myers, pounded on her door late at night during Halloween, shouting death threats and trying to force their way inside.

The frightening encounter, which occurred around 10 p.m. near Washington, D.C., was caught on the family’s doorbell camera, showing the costumed intruders demanding entry and threatening violence.

According to WUSA9, the widow’s daughter, Shayla, initially mistook the knocking for a Halloween prank. “I said, ‘Happy Halloween,’” she recalled. But when the trio refused to leave, the situation escalated rapidly.

“The knocks would get harder and harder,” Shayla said. “My heart dropped when they said they were going to take a chair and break down the door.”

‘It’s either you coming out or we coming in’

The video footage shows the costumed trio standing close to the door, shouting menacingly. One voice can be heard yelling:

“It’s either you coming out or we coming in. Open the door!”

When the family threatened to call the police, the masked divs moved to the backyard, where they broke through a wooden fence and began banging on windows and peering inside the home.

Inside were Shayla, her younger brother, her recently widowed mother, and the family dog. The group stayed hidden while police were called.

The intruders eventually fled, but the psychological toll on the family was immediate. “My mom lost her husband not long ago,” Shayla said. “Now she’s terrified to stay alone in her own home.”

Police: ‘A very serious matter’

Alexandria Police Chief Tarrik McGuire called the incident “a very serious matter” and confirmed that investigators are reviewing the doorbell footage to identify the suspects.

“They began to make threatening and alarming comments to the family,” McGuire said during a press briefing. “Specifically, they said, ‘If you do not come out, we will come in,’ and also threatened to do bodily harm, stating that they would ultimately kill them.”

Authorities said the trio could face charges including burglary, criminal threats, and attempted home invasion. Officers have increased patrols in the area as Halloween approaches.

Online reaction: ‘Like something straight out of The Purge’

The footage has since spread across social media, sparking outrage and fear among viewers. Many compared the disturbing behavior to the 2013 dystopian thriller The Purge, in which masked attackers terrorize families during a lawless night of violence.

One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote:

“Literally The Purge. Absolutely horrifying and this is real life.”

Another commented:

“This isn’t a prank. It’s criminal intimidation. They should be locked up.”

While Halloween pranks are common, experts warn that violent or threatening behavior can carry serious legal consequences — particularly when it involves trespassing or harassment.

Fear and safety concerns rise ahead of Halloween

With Halloween festivities nearing, law enforcement agencies nationwide are urging residents to remain alert and report suspicious behavior, especially if strangers linger near homes in costume or attempt to scare residents.

Police recommend homeowners to:

• Keep outdoor lights and cameras on during the night.
• Avoid opening the door to unexpected visitors, even if they appear to be trick-or-treaters.
• Call 911 immediately if anyone attempts to enter your home or makes threats.

Community groups in Alexandria have also organized neighborhood watch patrols to help ensure safety during the holiday weekend.

A reminder of vulnerability

For Shayla and her family, the night left a lasting scar. What began as what seemed to be a prank turned into a nightmarish reminder of how quickly fear can turn real.
