Israel hails Trump’s “unwavering support” as hostages return home

On a day marked by celebration and relief, Israel announced that it will award US President Donald Trump the country’s highest civilian honour, the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honor, for his role in mediating the ceasefire that brought an end to the war with Hamas.

The announcement came on Monday, October 13, as Israel also welcomed home dozens of hostages released from Gaza following months of negotiations. Israeli President Isaac Herzog called Trump’s contribution “historic,” crediting him with not only helping to secure the hostages’ return but also paving the way for “a new era of peace and stability in the Middle East.”

“A friend of Israel and peace”: Herzog’s tribute to Trump

Taking to social media, President Herzog expressed gratitude toward his American counterpart:

“The Israeli people welcome you with so much love and gratitude! Thank you for all you have done to bring our hostages home. Thank you for your commitment to building a better future of peace in our region. God bless Israel! God bless America!”

In a statement from Herzog’s office, Trump was praised for his “tireless efforts” and “courageous leadership” that contributed to the end of the conflict.

“Through his tireless efforts, President Trump has not only helped bring our loved ones home but has also laid the foundations for a new era in the Middle East built on security, cooperation, and genuine hope for a peaceful future. It will be a great honor for me to present him with the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honor,” the statement read.

The award is expected to be presented in Jerusalem later this month, with senior Israeli and American officials in attendance.

From Abraham Accords to Gaza ceasefire: Trump’s evolving Middle East legacy

Herzog’s remarks emphasized Trump’s longstanding relationship with Israel, recalling his role in major diplomatic moves during his previous term, including the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states.

“President Trump’s legacy will be remembered for generations by the State of Israel and the Jewish people,” Herzog said, according to The Jerusalem Post. “From his unwavering support for the State of Israel to the advent of the Abraham Accords, from the historic agreements that brought our hostages home to the decisive strike on Iran’s nuclear program — his voice has always been one of courage and leadership.”

The recognition underscores Israel’s view of Trump as one of its most steadfast allies, particularly at a time when Washington’s traditional Middle East policy has come under renewed scrutiny due to shifting global alliances.

Trump’s claim: “We stopped another war”

Earlier this week, Trump had announced in a televised address that the conflict between Israel and Hamas had officially ended, calling it a “moment of pride for America.”

“We stopped another war,” Trump said from the White House on October 9. “It’s a proud moment for our country and for our partners in peace. The people of Israel and Gaza deserve to live without fear, and this agreement gives them that chance.”

The announcement followed months of high-stakes diplomacy reportedly involving backchannel mediation by Qatar, Egypt, and U.S. envoys, leading to a multi-phase ceasefire that included the release of hostages, withdrawal of certain Israeli forces, and expanded humanitarian access to Gaza.

What the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honor signifies

The Israeli Presidential Medal of Honor is the country’s highest civilian award, established in 2012. It recognizes individuals — Israeli or foreign — who have made “extraordinary contributions to the State of Israel or humanity.”

Past recipients include U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel. Trump will be the first sitting U.S. president to receive the award during his term in office.

Analysts view the decision as both symbolic and strategic, reaffirming U.S.-Israel ties amid global criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and strengthening Trump’s image as a peacemaker ahead of the 2026 U.S. elections.

A politically charged honour

While the award ceremony is being framed as a gesture of gratitude, it is not without controversy. Critics argue that the ceasefire came after an immense humanitarian toll: the war killed over 60,000 people in Gaza, according to local health officials, and left vast portions of the enclave in ruins.

Human rights groups have cautioned that celebrating diplomatic breakthroughs without addressing the humanitarian crisis risks overlooking civilian suffering on both sides.

Still, Israeli officials insist the honor reflects tangible results, the safe return of hostages, and a halt to large-scale hostilities, rather than political symbolism.

The broader implications for U.S.-Middle East diplomacy

Trump’s recognition marks a new chapter in America’s role in the Middle East peace process. Analysts say his administration’s approach, a blend of direct negotiation and hardline leverage — diverges from traditional multilateral diplomacy but has yielded measurable outcomes in certain areas.

Observers point to the renewed engagement between Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE as part of a wider regional stabilization effort driven by shared security and economic goals. However, questions remain about whether the current ceasefire will hold and how postwar reconstruction in Gaza will be managed.

TL;DR

• Israel will award U.S. President Donald Trump its highest civilian honour for brokering peace with Hamas.
• The announcement coincided with the return of hostages to Israel on October 13.
• President Isaac Herzog praised Trump’s leadership and called his efforts “historic.”
• Trump will become the first sitting U.S. president to receive the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honor.
• The move comes amid ongoing debate over the humanitarian toll of the Gaza war and U.S. policy in the region.
