TL;DR

Despite claiming credit for ending multiple global conflicts, President Donald Trump was passed over for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, which instead went to Venezuelan democracy activist Maria Corina Machado. Analysts say the Nobel Committee favors lasting peacebuilding and multilateral diplomacy over short-term deals and unilateral actions, areas where Trump’s record remains controversial.

Trump’s campaign for the Nobel Peace Prize

Since returning to the White House in January, President Donald Trump has repeatedly pushed the narrative that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, arguing that his administration “stopped eight wars.”

His team and supporters cited several recent diplomatic developments, most notably the Israel-Hamas peace deal, which he announced earlier this year as the conclusion of the two-year-long Gaza conflict. Trump has also taken credit for mediating the India–Pakistan crisis that erupted in May 2025, though New Delhi has publicly denied that Washington played a decisive role.

Despite public endorsements from some foreign governments, including Israel and Pakistan, the Nobel Committee opted for a different vision of peace this year.

Who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025?

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Maria Corina Machado, a Venezuelan democracy activist known for her decades-long fight for free elections and civil liberties in Venezuela.

Machado’s selection underscores the committee’s recurring emphasis on human rights, democracy, and long-term social resilience, rather than political deals or high-profile negotiations.

Her recognition also reflects a growing global concern for authoritarian backsliding and the need to protect democratic movements, themes that have dominated the Nobel’s peace agenda in recent years.

Why Trump’s efforts fell short

1. The Nobel Committee prioritizes long-term peacebuilding

Experts note that the Nobel Committee typically rewards leaders or movements demonstrating sustained, verifiable contributions to peace.

“There’s a huge difference between getting fighting to stop in the short term and resolving the root causes of the conflict.”
said Theo Zenou, historian and research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, in an interview with Reuters.

Trump’s efforts, while headline-grabbing, have not yet produced durable frameworks for reconciliation or international cooperation. The Nobel Committee historically favors outcomes that withstand political transitions and have broad international consensus, not those reliant on individual political momentum.

2. Climate change and credibility gaps

Another factor, experts say, is Trump’s dismissive stance on climate change, a defining global peace issue in the 21st century.

As Zenou explained,

“I don’t think they would award the most prestigious prize in the world to someone who does not believe in climate change. When you look at previous winners who have been bridge-builders, embodied international cooperation and reconciliation, these are not words we associate with Donald Trump.”

In recent years, the Nobel Committee has increasingly tied climate stability to peace, awarding divs like the IPCC and Al Gore for highlighting the security risks of environmental breakdown. Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement during his first term remains a major sticking point in his international reputation.

3. Missed deadlines and nomination issues

Reports suggest that Trump’s formal nominations, including those from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Pakistan’s government, were submitted after the February 1 deadline, rendering them ineligible for this year’s selection cycle.

While late endorsements can raise visibility, they hold no procedural weight once the official nomination window closes.

A familiar pursuit for Trump

This is not Trump’s first brush with the Nobel Peace Prize. During his first term, he was nominated by several European lawmakers after brokering normalization deals between Israel and Arab nations under the Abraham Accords in 2020.

At the time, the Nobel Committee similarly declined to award him, citing the accords’ limited regional impact and the continued volatility of Middle East relations.

Trump has continued to bring up the Nobel Prize as a measure of global validation, often contrasting himself with former President Barack Obama, who received the award in 2009.

What this means for Trump’s global image

Despite his renewed claims of being a “peacemaker,” Trump’s foreign policy remains polarizing. His emphasis on transactional diplomacy, nationalist rhetoric, and public disputes with allies has made it difficult for him to project the kind of multilateral leadership the Nobel Committee tends to celebrate.

However, his supporters argue that Trump’s “peace through strength” approach, emphasizing deterrence, defense spending, and direct negotiations, has delivered tangible results without prolonged U.S. military involvement.

Whether those achievements translate into long-term stability remains to be seen, but they have undoubtedly reshaped global perceptions of American diplomacy.

Looking ahead: the politics of peace recognition

The Nobel Peace Prize has often reflected global political currents as much as individual achievements. By honoring Maria Corina Machado, the committee reinforced its message that democratic courage and grassroots resistance are central to peace in the modern era.

Trump, meanwhile, continues to redefine how power, diplomacy, and recognition intersect in a world where traditional peacekeeping is giving way to complex geopolitical realignments.
