He later joked that while he went from “outstanding player of the year” in high school to “setting the record for most minutes not played” at Stanford, the experience shaped his character and career trajectory.

After earning a degree in economics in 1964 and an MBA from Harvard, Freeman co-founded Freeman Spogli & Co., a private equity firm known for its consumer and retail investments. Yet he remained closely tied to Stanford, both emotionally and financially.
