Real estate billionaire Donald Bren, one of America’s wealthiest men, has publicly distanced himself from his son David Bren, who faces accusations of running a fraudulent luxury car club that allegedly defrauded investors out of more than $2 million.

According to reports, David, a 33-year-old Harvard Law graduate, allegedly lured wealthy investors with promises of membership in an elite car club called “The Bunker” — a supposed “ultimate man cave” for the ultra-rich featuring Ferraris, Bugattis, fine dining, and cigars.

What was “The Bunker” scam?

Court documents reviewed by The Los Angeles Times describe “The Bunker” as a fake high-end automotive and social club targeting affluent clients between 2020 and 2022.

David Bren allegedly claimed that the club would allow members access to rare supercars and exclusive social spaces stocked with luxury amenities. Investor materials also falsely listed high-profile divs such as Mark Cuban, August Getty, Larry Ellison, and NBA star Kristaps Porziņģis as founding members.

Each member was told to pay $14,500 per month for access to the so-called club, which, according to multiple lawsuits, never existed.

“The Bunker does not exist. There is no ultra-high-end automotive club. There are no members. The business is a mirage,” one lawsuit stated.

How investors were allegedly misled

Several investors told The Los Angeles Times that they were persuaded by David’s apparent family connections and polished persona. He often presented himself as someone with direct access to elite business divs, and even implied he could “call his father, Donald Bren, anytime.”

One investor, Nanxi Lu, said she put in $100,000 after being told that The Bunker had secured a Beverly Hills hotel deal. When she later requested to withdraw her investment, David reportedly repaid only $10,000 and offered her a “free membership” instead.

Another investor, Tony Chen, Lu’s mentor, lost a significant portion of his savings to the scheme. He died by suicide in 2022 after suffering financial ruin, according to Santa Clara County officials.

Donald Bren cuts ties with his son

In a rare public statement, Donald Bren, 93, issued a blunt message through his spokesperson:

“We do not have a personal or business relationship with this individual.”

The billionaire chairman of the Irvine Company, one of the largest private real estate empires in the U.S., is worth an estimated $19 billion as of 2025.

Sources close to the family told reporters that Donald and David have had little contact for years, and that the elder Bren has no involvement in his son’s business dealings.

Inside Donald Bren’s strained relationship with his son

Tensions between father and son first became public in 2003, when Donald Bren’s former partner Jennifer McKay Gold — mother to David and his sister — sued for increased child support. The case drew widespread media attention, but a jury ultimately ruled in the billionaire’s favor.

Since then, the younger Bren has reportedly had a complicated relationship with his father and has sometimes leveraged that estrangement to gain sympathy from investors.

“He was slick. He played this, like, victim; that’s how he pulled people’s heartstrings,” said Mike Tran, an investor who lost money in the scheme.

Despite claiming close ties to his father, records show Donald Bren had no connection to “The Bunker” or its finances.

What’s next for the investigation?

Authorities are still examining how the alleged scam operated and where the investors’ funds went.

According to court filings, David told some backers he planned to purchase Mr. C’s Beverly Hills Hotel for $90 million to store exotic cars — but investigators say this was a fabricated claim.

So far, no criminal charges have been confirmed, but several civil lawsuits are pending. Legal experts suggest that if investigators find evidence of wire fraud or misrepresentation, federal charges could follow.
