A rare birth in Goiás sparks global attention after newborn photographed with a copper T in hand.

A photograph from Brazil has gone viral, showing a newborn clutching a copper intrauterine device (IUD), the very contraceptive meant to prevent his conception.

The baby, named Matheus Gabriel, was born at Hospital Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Nerópolis, Goiás, to 27-year-old Queidy Araujo de Oliveira. In the striking image, his tiny fist holds the copper T, a device designed to be 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

That 1% margin, however, appears to have made all the difference.

What Exactly Happened?

Oliveira had been using the copper T for nearly two years. During a routine medical checkup, she discovered she was pregnant despite the device being in place. Doctors advised against removing it, warning that extraction could put the pregnancy at risk.

She carried on with the pregnancy, and in a twist of fate, the baby was born not only healthy but holding the very device meant to stop his arrival.

“He came into the world defying the odds, with the copper T in hand,” local reports noted.

What Is a Copper T and How Does It Work?

An intrauterine device (IUD), commonly known as a copper T or copper coil, is a small T-shaped contraceptive placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy.

• Effectiveness: Roughly 99%, making it one of the most reliable forms of birth control.
• How it works: The copper interferes with sperm movement and prevents fertilization.
• Duration: Can last between 5 to 10 years, depending on the brand.

Yet, rare cases of pregnancies occurring with an IUD in place have been documented worldwide, often due to displacement or improper positioning.

Medical Perspective

Doctors emphasize that such cases are extraordinary but possible. Pregnancy with an IUD in place can pose risks, including ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage. In Oliveira’s case, doctors opted for the safest route: leaving the device inside until delivery.

That decision resulted in a dramatic moment when baby Matheus appeared with the IUD in hand — a symbolic gesture that captured global fascination.

Public Reaction: Miracle or Medical Fluke?

On social media, the image has been widely shared with comments ranging from humor to reverence:

• Some called it a “miracle baby” and a “sign from God.”
• Others labeled it a “1% baby” — the rare exception to medical statistics.
• A few skeptics questioned whether the photo was staged, though hospital staff confirmed its authenticity.

Why This Story Matters

• Human Interest: Stories of “miracle births” tend to resonate across cultures, especially when science and faith appear to intersect.
• Medical Awareness: While rare, pregnancies with IUDs highlight the importance of follow-up care, placement checks, and awareness of contraceptive limitations.
• Cultural Symbolism: In countries like Brazil, where religion is deeply tied to family life, images like this often spark broader debates about destiny, science, and divine will.

TL;DR

• A Brazilian woman gave birth to a baby holding her copper T contraceptive in his fist.
• She had used the device for nearly two years before unexpectedly becoming pregnant.
• Doctors advised against removing the IUD, and it came out naturally during delivery.
• The viral photo has been called everything from a miracle to a medical anomaly.
