Lyft Driver Locked Doors After Seeing 250kg Passenger; She Sued And Won

A Detroit case highlights Michigan’s unique protections against weight discrimination—and why ride-hailing companies need to do better.

When Dank Demoss, a Detroit-based rapper, ordered a Lyft in January to get to a Lions watch party, she never expected the ride to turn into a civil rights battle. The Mercedes-Benz sedan that pulled up didn’t even let her in. According to Demoss, the driver locked the doors, looked her up and down, and declared she “wouldn’t fit.”

The incident escalated quickly. Demoss, who weighs nearly 250 kilograms, insisted she could fit in the car and demanded the driver unlock the doors. Instead, he doubled down, telling her the tires would “crumble under her weight” and suggesting she order an Uber XL instead. Furious, Demoss recorded the interaction and later filed a lawsuit against Lyft under the Michigan Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act.

Earlier this month, she won. While the details remain confidential, Demoss secured a settlement that forces Lyft to publicly reckon with how discrimination plays out in ride-hailing platforms.

What Happened Between the Lyft Driver and Demoss?

The standoff wasn’t just about a single car ride. Demoss argued that the driver’s refusal to transport her was a form of public accommodation harassment—essentially saying she was denied a service available to others because of her body size.

The driver, who has not been named, told Demoss he would cancel the ride rather than let her in the car. He pointed to the size of the Mercedes and said it wasn’t “suitable” for her. Under Michigan law, however, businesses open to the public—including ride-hailing companies—cannot deny service based on protected categories.

What Does Michigan Law Say About Weight Discrimination?

Michigan is one of the only states that explicitly addresses weight discrimination.

  • Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act: While weight isn’t listed among its core protected classes (race, sex, religion, etc.), the Michigan Department of Civil Rights does accept complaints of height and weight discrimination.
  • Transportation Rules: The state’s Limousine, Taxicab, and Transportation Network Company Act requires companies like Lyft to enforce nondiscrimination policies. Drivers must be informed that they cannot refuse or surcharge riders on the basis of disability—or, in practice, perceived physical traits.

This makes Michigan an outlier. Most states have no specific protections against weight bias, leaving victims with little recourse. The Demoss case underscores why Michigan’s framework matters.

Why the Case Against Lyft Matters

1. Public Accountability for Ride-Hailing Companies

Lyft issued a statement reaffirming its stance:

“Lyft unequivocally condemns all forms of discrimination—we believe in a community where everyone is treated with equal respect and mutual kindness.”

Yet, critics argue the company’s policies aren’t always enforced at the ground level. A driver’s personal judgment can still deny a paying customer access to transportation.

2. Broadening the Conversation on Weight Bias

Weight discrimination is often normalized in ways other biases are not. Comments about “fitting” or “overloading” a car blur the line between safety concerns and prejudice. Demoss’s victory forces companies and courts to distinguish between the two.

3. Setting Precedent for Future Cases

While this case settled privately, it could encourage others facing similar treatment to come forward. That alone may deter drivers from making snap judgments based on appearance.

Are There Other Examples of Weight Bias in Services?

Unfortunately, yes.

  • Airlines: Passengers have long complained of being forced to buy two seats, with only limited protections.
  • Restaurants and Venues: People report being denied entry or humiliated when furniture isn’t designed to accommodate them.
  • Workplace Discrimination: Studies show hiring managers consistently rate heavier applicants lower, even when qualifications are identical.

Michigan’s approach offers one of the few legal remedies, which is why this lawsuit stands out nationally.

What Could Change for Lyft and Other Ride-Hailing Companies?

  • Stricter Driver Training: Ensuring drivers understand discrimination policies beyond disability categories.
  • Clear Penalties: Establishing consequences when drivers refuse service without valid cause.
  • Design Options in Apps: Giving riders more control when choosing vehicle types to avoid unnecessary confrontations.

Why This Story Resonates Beyond Detroit

The Demoss case is about more than one woman’s confrontation. It forces a reckoning with how society views weight, fairness, and dignity in everyday spaces like transportation. For millions of Americans who don’t fit into narrow “average” body expectations, access to public services should not depend on a driver’s bias.

As civil rights evolve, so too must our understanding of what equality looks like in practice. And in Michigan, at least, the law is clear: everyone deserves a seat.

TL;DR

  • Rapper Dank Demoss sued Lyft after a driver locked her out of a Mercedes, claiming she “wouldn’t fit.”
  • Michigan law allows claims of weight discrimination, unlike most U.S. states.
  • She won a confidential settlement, spotlighting weight bias in public services.
  • Lyft reiterated its nondiscrimination stance but faces pressure to enforce policies more consistently.
  • The case could inspire others nationwide to challenge weight-based bias.
