Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday was marked by a dramatic walkout, with a majority of delegations leaving the hall in protest. The incident underscored Israel’s growing diplomatic isolation as Netanyahu doubled down on rejecting Palestinian statehood and vowed to continue Israel’s military campaign in Gaza until Hamas is defeated.

What happened at the UN?

Netanyahu began his address to a divided chamber in New York, but before his first words, dozens of delegations walked out.

• Who left? Representatives from Arab, Muslim, and African nations led the exit. Several European delegations also followed suit.
• Who stayed? Allies of Israel, including a handful of Western countries and some Pacific nations, remained in their seats, applauding Netanyahu’s presence.

The protest was widely interpreted as a symbolic rebuke of Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza, which has drawn mounting international criticism over civilian casualties and humanitarian conditions.

Netanyahu’s key messages

Vow to continue the Gaza campaign

Netanyahu rejected calls for a ceasefire, saying Israel would “finish the job” against Hamas and do it “as quickly as possible.” His words aligned with Israel’s military strategy of eradicating Hamas infrastructure while showing no signs of scaling down operations.

Rejection of Palestinian statehood

The Israeli leader pushed back against a wave of international recognition of Palestinian statehood announced recently by countries including Britain, Canada, Australia, and France.

“Israel will not allow you to shove a terrorist state down our throats. We will not commit national suicide,” Netanyahu declared, framing Palestinian sovereignty as an existential threat.

Denial of genocide and starvation allegations

Facing accusations at the International Court of Justice and from humanitarian groups, Netanyahu dismissed claims of genocide in Gaza as “baseless.” He argued that Israel had repeatedly warned civilians to evacuate, placing the blame for casualties on Hamas.

Message to hostages

Addressing Israelis held captive in Gaza, Netanyahu said:

“We have not forgotten you – not even for a second. The entire nation is with you, and we will not be silent or let up until we bring you all home, the living and the dead alike.”

Hamas responds to walkout

Soon after the speech, Hamas seized on the UN protest to highlight Israel’s diplomatic isolation.

Taher al-Nunu, media adviser to Hamas’s political bureau, said:

“Boycotting Netanyahu’s speech is one manifestation of Israel’s isolation and the consequences of the war of extermination.”

For Hamas, the walkout was not just a protest but a signal that Israel’s war strategy is losing international legitimacy.

Why the walkout matters

The protest highlighted deepening divides within the UN over Israel’s war in Gaza:

1. Diplomatic isolation: The walkout reinforced the narrative that Israel is increasingly cut off from large blocs of the international community, especially in the Global South.
2. Global shift on Palestine: With more Western countries recognizing Palestinian statehood, Netanyahu’s rejection appeared out of step with growing international consensus.
3. Pressure on allies: The spectacle could fuel domestic debates in allied nations, where public opinion has become more critical of Israel’s military tactics.
4. Symbolism at the UN: Walkouts are rare at the General Assembly, making this one of the most visible protests against Israel on a global stage in recent years.

What’s next?

Netanyahu’s defiance suggests no near-term shift in Israel’s Gaza strategy, but the fallout at the UN could have long-term implications:

• Legal challenges: With warrants and cases pending in international courts, Netanyahu’s global mobility and diplomatic influence are already constrained.
• Strains with allies: While Washington continues to support Israel militarily, growing recognition of Palestinian statehood by close allies signals cracks in the united front.
• Psychological warfare: Combined with Netanyahu’s earlier order to broadcast his UN speech across Gaza, Israel appears intent on using both military and symbolic tactics to maintain pressure.

TL;DR

Netanyahu’s UNGA speech on September 26 triggered a mass walkout by delegations protesting Israel’s war in Gaza. He vowed to “finish the job” against Hamas, rejected Palestinian statehood as “national suicide,” denied genocide allegations, and addressed Israeli hostages. Hamas hailed the protest as proof of Israel’s isolation, while the incident highlighted the widening diplomatic rift over the Gaza conflict.
