US President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday that he had “fired” Erik Siebert, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, amid reports that Siebert faced pressure over investigations involving two of Trump’s political adversaries. The move has raised concerns about political interference in federal law enforcement.

Siebert, who led a team of roughly 300 prosecutors in a district known for handling high-profile national security cases, had reportedly informed Justice Department leadership that he would not pursue charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James due to insufficient evidence, according to the Washington Post.

Who is Erik Siebert, and why does his removal matter?

Erik Siebert is a Virginia Military Institute graduate and former Washington, D.C., police officer. As the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, he oversaw sensitive federal cases, including those related to national security, white-collar crime, and significant civil and criminal litigation.

Siebert’s resignation, announced to his staff via email Friday, came after a period of reported pressure to prosecute Trump’s political opponents. Officials say some in the administration had urged Siebert to remain in his post despite the controversy, citing his experience and the strategic importance of his jurisdiction.

What triggered the firing?

Trump’s Truth Social post made clear he personally requested Siebert’s removal. He wrote:

“Today I withdrew the Nomination of Erik Siebert as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, when I was informed that he received the UNUSUALLY STRONG support of the two absolutely terrible, sleazebag Democrat Senators, from the Great State of Virginia. He didn’t quit, I fired him!”

Earlier in the day, in the Oval Office, Trump told reporters:

“I want him out.”

The reported trigger appears tied to Siebert’s decision not to prosecute:

• James Comey: Allegations that he lied to Congress. Siebert reportedly saw insufficient grounds for prosecution.
• Letitia James: Alleged mortgage fraud and manipulation of property values to secure favorable loans or insurance. Siebert determined the evidence was insufficient to pursue charges.

Background on the political divs involved

James Comey

Comey, fired by Trump in 2017 while leading the investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 election, has remained a vocal critic of the former president. Trump has repeatedly criticized Comey’s handling of the FBI investigation and has publicly questioned his integrity.

Letitia James

As New York Attorney General, James filed a $464 million lawsuit against Trump and his company, alleging financial misrepresentation to obtain loans and insurance advantages. Trump allies, including Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, have accused James of falsifying mortgage documents, though these claims remain contested. Trump, speaking about the case, admitted uncertainty:

“It looks to me like she’s really guilty of something, but I really don’t know.”

Political and legal implications

Siebert’s removal highlights tensions over the independence of federal prosecutors. Experts warn that such firings may create the perception of politically motivated legal action, potentially undermining public trust in the Justice Department.

Key points to consider:

• The Eastern District of Virginia often handles high-profile national security and white-collar crime cases. Replacing its U.S. Attorney could shift priorities in ongoing investigations.
• Trump’s insistence on pursuing cases against political opponents echoes broader concerns about the use of law enforcement for personal or political gain.
• Federal law and norms traditionally shield prosecutors from political interference, but public disputes like this one put those protections in the spotlight.

Reactions and next steps

Officials and analysts are closely watching who will replace Siebert and how this might impact ongoing cases in the district. Some Justice Department insiders had advocated retaining Siebert, citing his experience and the sensitive nature of the office.

Legal experts say that any direct pressure to pursue or drop investigations could trigger inquiries into potential abuses of power, particularly if it aligns with political motivations.

TL;DR

President Trump fired U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert after he refused to prosecute former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, citing insufficient evidence. The move raises concerns about political influence over federal prosecutors and the independence of the Justice Department.
