What happened at Texas State University

A student at Texas State University (TXST) has been expelled after a viral video showed him reenacting the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed during a speech at Utah Valley University last week.

The clip, widely circulated on social media, showed the student mimicking Kirk’s fatal shooting while surrounded by peers, some of whom laughed and cheered. At one point, the student climbed onto a statue and repeated the reenactment, adding profanity directed at a local chapter of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), the conservative organization co-founded by Kirk.

University response to the viral video

Following the backlash, TXST confirmed the student’s identity and announced disciplinary action.

“The individual is no longer a student at TXST,” the university said in a statement. “Federal law prevents us from commenting further on individual conduct matters. We will not tolerate behavior that mocks, trivializes, or promotes violence on campus.”

University President Kelly Damphousse also addressed the controversy in a message to students:

“I am asking that each of us consider the impact that our words and actions can have on those around us. From my first moment as the TXST president, I have espoused the ideal that we (all of us) belong here. I have never wavered in that expectation (or in that hope). While I cannot control what others say or do, I can control how I respond to them. I ask that we all seek ways to lift our campus up to its noblest aspirations in the days and weeks to come.”

Why the video caused outrage

The timing of the video—just days after Kirk’s killing—fueled anger among conservatives and civil rights advocates alike.

• Supporters of Kirk argued that the reenactment showed a lack of empathy and respect toward victims of political violence.
• Others condemned it as an example of how university campuses sometimes become hostile environments for ideological diversity.
• Some online commentators also questioned whether expulsion was sufficient punishment, suggesting potential legal consequences.

The clip has further polarized the ongoing national debate around free speech, political expression, and campus discipline in the wake of violent incidents.

Who was Charlie Kirk and why his death matters

Charlie Kirk, 31, rose to prominence as the founder of Turning Point USA, becoming one of the most recognizable conservative voices in America. He was a staunch ally of President Donald Trump and a frequent critic of progressive policies, particularly on gender, sexuality, and gun rights.

On September 10, Kirk was fatally shot mid-speech during a Q&A session at Utah Valley University. He was answering a question on mass shootings when the gunman opened fire.

The shooter, Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested after a 30-hour manhunt and now faces seven charges, including aggravated murder. Investigators are probing whether his actions were politically motivated, citing text messages in which Robinson expressed anger at Kirk’s “hatred.”

Why this expulsion matters in a broader context

The Texas State University incident highlights a growing tension in American higher education: how schools balance free expression with community safety and dignity in moments of national trauma.

Key issues raised include:

• Should universities punish students for speech acts—even if offensive—that stop short of direct threats?
• Does mocking a political assassination cross the line into promoting violence?
• How do campuses foster inclusivity when national politics polarize their student bodies?

For Texas State, the decision to expel the student sends a clear signal: mocking acts of violence has consequences, especially when tied to real-world tragedies.

TL;DR

A Texas State University student has been expelled after a viral video showed him reenacting the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The university condemned the act as “mocking and trivializing violence.” The incident comes amid heightened national debate over free speech and political violence on campus, just days after Kirk’s murder at Utah Valley University.
