Sweden’s newly appointed health minister, Elisabet Lann, dramatically collapsed during her first press conference on Tuesday, just hours after stepping into the role. The incident, caught on video and now widely circulated online, has sparked both shock and relief as she later confirmed her condition was linked to a sudden drop in blood sugar.

The collapse that stunned Sweden

Lann was standing alongside Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and other senior officials when the episode unfolded. Moments after finishing her remarks, she suddenly lost her balance, toppled into a transparent lectern, and fell to the ground in front of reporters.

Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch rushed forward immediately, turning her over to assist while others called for help. Within seconds, several officials and journalists surrounded the unconscious minister.

She was escorted out but returned shortly afterward, reassuring the press that she was recovering. “This was not exactly a normal Tuesday, and this is what can happen when you have a blood sugar drop,” she said.

Who is Elisabet Lann?

• Lann, a former municipal commissioner in Gothenburg, was appointed Sweden’s health minister on September 9, 2025, after her predecessor’s unexpected resignation.
• Known for her background in public health and social services, she was thrust into the national spotlight on her very first day in office.
• Her collapse, though brief, has intensified scrutiny around her health as she assumes one of the country’s most demanding cabinet roles.

What is hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)?

Doctors describe Lann’s condition as a sudden blood sugar drop, medically termed hypoglycaemia.

• Definition: Hypoglycaemia occurs when blood sugar levels fall below the normal range. For most diabetics, this is below 70 mg/dL; for non-diabetics, it’s under 55 mg/dL.
• Causes: It is most common in people with diabetes, particularly those using insulin, but can also be triggered by skipped meals, intense exercise, alcohol consumption, or other metabolic conditions.
• Symptoms: Shakiness, rapid heartbeat, sweating, dizziness, irritability, blurred vision, slurred speech, and in severe cases, seizures or fainting.

Lann’s sudden collapse reflects the more extreme end of hypoglycaemia’s effects, where the brain is deprived of the glucose it needs to function.

Why it matters for a health minister

The incident was particularly striking given Lann’s portfolio. As Sweden’s health minister, she will oversee major policy debates on healthcare access, funding, and public health reforms. Her own health scare underscores the very real human side of medical conditions often treated as abstract policy issues.

What happens next?

• Officials have not confirmed whether Lann has diabetes or another underlying condition.
• She is expected to undergo medical evaluation while continuing her duties.
• The episode may spark broader conversations in Sweden about public awareness of hypoglycaemia and how quickly it can escalate into a medical emergency.

TL;DR

Sweden’s new health minister, Elisabet Lann, collapsed during her first press briefing alongside Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. She later said the incident was caused by a sudden drop in blood sugar. While she recovered quickly and returned to the event, the episode has drawn attention to hypoglycaemia, a condition that can cause fainting, disorientation, and in severe cases, seizures or unconsciousness.
