Iowa Mother Sentenced to 10 Years for Injecting Toddler With Insulin

An Iowa woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after admitting she deliberately injected her two-year-old son with insulin, causing dangerous drops in his blood sugar levels.

What happened inside the hospital?

In March 2023, Alexandra Marie Frost, 27, brought her toddler to the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital after he began experiencing repeated episodes of low blood sugar.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE, doctors initially treated the boy with glucose, but his condition worsened. Tests revealed abnormally high insulin levels—raising suspicions that something was wrong.

Staff later installed a video camera in the child’s hospital room. On March 13, footage showed Frost injecting her son’s foot with a syringe before discarding it in a sharps container. The child screamed in pain after the injection.

Munchausen syndrome by proxy

Doctors concluded the case was consistent with Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a rare but severe condition in which a caregiver deliberately makes another person ill to gain attention or sympathy.

Medical experts stressed that injecting insulin into someone who does not need it can cause seizures, coma, or death.

After Iowa’s Department of Health and Human Services removed the child from Frost’s custody, his blood sugar levels returned to normal.

The charges and sentencing

Frost initially faced a Class C felony charge of child endangerment, causing serious injury. Prosecutors later accepted her written guilty plea in June to two Class D felonies:

  • Administering a hazardous substance
  • Child endangerment causing bodily injury

On Friday, August 29, a Johnson County District Court judge sentenced Frost to 10 years in prison.

Why this case stands out

  • It highlights the extreme dangers of factitious disorder imposed on another (FDIA), more commonly known as Munchausen by proxy.
  • It underscores the importance of hospital vigilance. The hidden camera installed by staff was key to confirming suspicions.
  • It shows how swift intervention by health services protected the child, who has since stabilized.
