The viral classroom moment

A viral video circulating on social media shows students erupting with cheers after their professor announced a midterm exam was “cancelled” because of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement. The clip, however, wasn’t an actual cancellation—it was a playful skit by associate professor Matthew Pittman of the University of Tennessee, designed to share the headline-making news with his class.

In the video, Pittman dramatically declares: “We have a biochem midterm today, but Taylor and Travis just got engaged. Due to this information, I can’t focus, you all can’t focus, class is cancelled, get out of here.” His mock announcement sent students rushing out of the classroom, clapping and laughing.

The professor explains his motivation

After the clip went viral, Pittman clarified that it was staged. As a professor of advertising and public relations specializing in social influence, he said the performance was a deliberate way to connect classroom culture with the online buzz around Swift and Kelce.

“I don’t know how anybody could be expected to focus on schoolwork or anything work or career related right now,” Pittman joked on Instagram. He added that, as a self-proclaimed Swiftie, he recognized the engagement’s cultural weight, predicting their announcement post would become “the number one shared post in the history of social media.”

The bigger picture: when pop culture meets education

Pittman’s skit also highlights how professors are increasingly using cultural moments to connect with students. Rather than treating viral news as a distraction, educators like Pittman are embracing it to make learning environments more relatable and engaging.

From an advertising and branding perspective, Swift and Kelce’s relationship—and now engagement—represents a cultural flashpoint that blurs the lines between celebrity, sports, and social media. Pittman’s reaction doubled as a lighthearted lesson in the power of cultural influence.

Why it matters

• For students: It offered comic relief during exam season and created a memorable classroom moment.
• For Swifties: It amplified the fandom’s joy and validated just how big the engagement news had become.
• For educators: It demonstrated a creative way to bridge academia with pop culture, making lessons more engaging.
