Melania Trump is keeping a close eye on her only son, Barron Trump, as he enters his sophomore year at New York University’s Stern School of Business. According to reports, the First Lady remains intensely protective of the 19-year-old, ensuring he is shielded from bullying, peer pressure, and the political spotlight that comes with being the child of President Donald Trump.

Melania’s protective role as Barron begins sophomore year

A political insider told People that Melania “watches Barron constantly in an effort to be sure nobody messes with him or bullies him.” The source added that she “always knows where he is and what he’s doing.”

Barron, who began his university studies in September 2024, stepped into college life just as his father was securing a return to the White House. Donald Trump won re-election in November 2024, and was sworn in for a second presidential term in January 2025.

Unlike many of his peers, Barron does not live in NYU dormitories. Instead, Melania arranged for him to stay at Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan, citing concerns about his comfort and adjustment. According to reports, she believed dorm life was not “in the stars” for him at this stage.

How Barron is adjusting at NYU

Despite the political baggage of being a Trump in a largely Democratic city, Barron appears to be fitting in well. Sources have described him as “tall, handsome, and well-liked,” noting that even students with liberal leanings have warmed to him socially.

Observers say that Melania has worked to balance Barron’s need for independence with her protective instincts, ensuring that he has the space to grow academically and socially while remaining closely supervised.

Melania’s life beyond motherhood

While she devotes significant attention to her son, Melania has also kept busy with personal and professional projects. Insiders say she splits her time among New York City, New Jersey, and Washington, while also working on a documentary project expected to premiere on Amazon Prime Video later this year.

Her profile as First Lady has also taken on an international dimension. Earlier this month, Melania reportedly sent a heartfelt letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to end the war in Ukraine for the sake of children affected by the conflict.

Why Melania’s role matters

Melania Trump’s vigilant approach to parenting reflects the unique challenges faced by presidential children. Barron, who has grown up largely out of the public eye compared to his older siblings, is now navigating adulthood while his father occupies the nation’s highest office.

Her efforts to safeguard him highlight the intersection of private family life and public scrutiny—a dynamic that has followed First Families throughout U.S. history.

As Barron continues his college journey, Melania’s influence appears set to remain strong, ensuring he remains grounded while adapting to both campus life and the political stage surrounding his family.
