Quick Summary

A Florida mother, Sierra Bronner (39), was arrested after putting a loaded gun in her child’s school backpack and instructing them to deliver it to their father. The child discovered the weapon and told a teacher, prompting a school security response. Authorities called the act reckless, warning it could have ended in tragedy.

A Florida mother has been arrested after allegedly placing a loaded firearm in her young child’s backpack and instructing them to return it to their father. The disturbing incident was reported at Coppergate Elementary School (Coppergate School of the Arts) in Middleburg, Clay County, Florida, on August 13, 2025.

What happened at the school?

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), the child discovered the gun in their backpack upon arriving at school and immediately notified a teacher. The teacher alerted school authorities and law enforcement.

As a safety precaution, the school was placed on “secure status”, a lockdown-lite measure allowing classes to continue but restricting entry or exit from the campus until deputies secured the weapon.

Who was arrested?

Authorities identified the mother as Sierra Bronner, 39. Investigators allege she placed the loaded handgun in the backpack before school and instructed the child to give it to their father.

• The child’s parents do not live together.
• The father reportedly dropped the child off at school, unaware that the firearm was inside the bag.

Bronner was arrested and charged with:

• Child neglect
• Giving a firearm to a minor

She was later transported to the Clay County Jail without incident. The Florida Department of Children and Families has also been notified and is taking further action regarding the child’s welfare.

Sheriff condemns “poor decision”

Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook criticized the mother’s actions, emphasizing the potential dangers of mishandling firearms around children:

“In this specific case, this was a poor decision and could’ve ended in tragedy. I’m grateful for our partnership with Clay County District Schools and applaud our school resource deputies and detectives for their work to keep our students safe.”

Sheriff Cook also urged parents to check their children’s belongings daily and maintain open communication about what is—and isn’t—appropriate to bring to school.

Broader context: guns and children in schools

This case is not an isolated incident. The U.S. has seen multiple cases where children unintentionally carried or accessed firearms, sometimes with tragic consequences.

• In 2022, a Chicago second grader accidentally brought a gun to school. The firearm discharged in class, injuring another student. The child had reportedly found the weapon under their mother’s bed. The mother was later charged with child endangerment.

Such incidents reignite debates over gun safety at home, parental responsibility, and secure firearm storage laws. According to advocacy groups, an estimated 4.6 million U.S. children live in homes with at least one loaded, unlocked firearm, significantly raising the risk of accidents.

Why this matters

This case underscores:

• The critical role of schools and law enforcement in quickly responding to threats before harm occurs.
• The need for safe firearm storage, especially in households with children.
• The potential legal consequences for parents who fail to exercise caution with guns around minors.

As the investigation continues, Bronner faces serious charges that could have long-term implications for both her and her child.
